Engine rebuild questions

I am planning on doing a rebuild and street port on my 12A in the future, but before I do it, i have some question i want to ask. The car is going to be driven mostly for track and auto-x and i dont have to worry about smog.

1. Which rebuild should i buy? The atkins rotary overhaul kit (http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/cu...cat=590&page=1) or the RB race kit(http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset....umber=30011R)? The Atkins kit has solid corner seals, but the RB one has carbon apex seals and springs and they claim they can handle 8500 rpm. Is there other rebuild kit that is better?

2. What carb should I use? Right now, i have a Yaw carb that is tuned for a stockport, would this work well on at street port? Or should I get a Weber 48 IDA? Which one would make more power? Is there other carb that is better?

3. How hard is it to port? How much would it be to just get a port from a shop?

The carbon apex seals provide less wear on the housings and handle high rpms better. They also wear out sooner. If you plan of running above 8k rpm on a regular basis, there other mods needed, such as hardened stationary gears, 3-window bearings and oil mods. Balancing the rotating assembley is also recommended.

As far as porting goes, check out the engine building section at nopistons.com for advice and tools needed. If you choose to do it yourself, practice on some junk irons first.

Honestly I personally wouldn't get either of those. I would be looking at the kit that pineapple racing offers, they're kit comes with S6 corner spring seals (wedge style rather than wire style), all OEM seals including apex seals (option for NRS ceramics for extra $, NRS is doing big thing check out the race section), a heavy duty water seal option, and other goodies that they have found to be the best engine components.

When it's all torn appart you should take a look at the housings, bearings, stationary gears, eccentric shaft and rotors and decide if you need to get more involved and start replacing them.

That race kit from racing beat there is for racing applications like they listed. These seals will not work well for a street car due to lack of longevity, lack of sealing in low RPMs, you are better going with OEM seals unless it is a race/track car. If it is a race/track car read more into NRS and what they have to offer.

For some reason i cannot find the link for the rebuild kit from Pineapple racing, the NRS seals is too expensive for me.

Hmmm just double check and I see what you mean, looks like they dont have the 3 mm apex seals. May want to checkout mazdatrix for those. Basically I would recommend the OEM parts, especially when it comes to oil control rings. Pineapple racing has an interesting write about about the use of viton seals and how they are hit or miss. Also it would be worthwhile investing in the s6 wedge corner seal springs.

(hmmm looks like mazdatrix is currently down as well) You can always source most of the parts from your local mazda dealer if you want to. Obviousily the simplicity of buying it as a kit is nice, but it's not very difficult to comprise a list of the parts you require.

I was waiting for that response. ($$$) I'd go w/ Atkins kit and be done with it. Of course everyone has there own opinions but ask guys who actually used what they recommend, not guys who "heard" about this or that. I use Atkins rebuild kit and never had any issues.

FYI for thoes that want an ALL OEM rebuild kit I can do thoes too...

If you dont need bearings {rotor & gear} I have a kit that is a little cheeper with the same parts in it.
