Engine Rebuild
Engine Rebuild
So i have a 1985 GLS-SE 13b and just hit the 200,000 mile mark and am going to rebuild the engine just to do it. I have ordered the kit with 3mm apex seals and am going to port and polish it when i get it apart. the main thing im looking at tho is after rebuild care. i have know some1 that had their engine rebuilt and they said the i will need to wait 10,00 miles befor i take it above 3k rpm. im not to sure about this. so if anyone has any tips on how i should treat my engine after i rebuild it or if i should treat it any differant i would like to hear your input.
10K seems a bit on the **** side IMHO. Gentle (no hard accelleration or sustained high rpm) for the first 1000mi seems more on order. Would change the oil and filter at 1K, then you should be good to go.
If you haven't done a rebuild yourself there are several excellent videos from mazdatrix, Atkins and www.diy-re.co.nz that will save you a world of hurt in how to do it properly. Also some free videos at pineappleracing.com that are excellent (tho they don't cover the entire rebuild).

OK I was thinking 1000 but when i heard 10,000 i was shocked. i have been looking into it for a little while and have been reading up on it. i will watch some videos as well. Thanks
what i did when i built mine 4 yrs ago. keep it under 3500 for the first 1k miles. then the next 1k miles i would occasionally take it to 5k but not wot. i wouldn't do any wot thru the gears til after i had done 2500 miles.
also i am wanting to port and polish it since i have it apart. i have been looking into it and all i can seem to find is exhuast templates for my engine. do you think it would be ok to use a porting template from a 2nd gen 6 port N/A. my engine is a 6 port so i don't think that it would be a problem at all.

ok sounds good i'll just go with the bridge port template from pinnapple racing. will i need to do anything with my ECU or will i be ok if i don't do anything to it for now
A gslse if a fabulous driving car, especially with a little more power. Going to higher compression rotors (s5 na or renesis), rb "streetport" exhaust, combined with a good streetport (pictured previously), light flywheel and drop in k&n filter will provide a very noticeable difference. I would even dare to add pineapple sleeves as well. This combination will function very well with the factory computer and preserve the all too valuable stock appearance of the engine bay. With the right talent there is a little to be found in tuning the advance curve but you gotta be a little experienced there (very very old school !)...Be a little conservative on the exhaust port, too big will be unnecessary and too loud.
Next, a gearing change to 4.44's will give a little more spirit off the line and a s5 tranny will preserve the same highway rpm in 5th gear.
If you really want to go bridgeport the intake will not flow sufficiently and the computer will not be sutiable, so you need to make many other revisions including a standalone. In this case a TII transplant would be better.

my rebuild is almost done now. Im wondering about first start up. i read that on the first start i'll need to tune it some of course. what im wondering is do i do a rev test on it once i get it all warmed up and tuned just right. or do i not do a rev test?
