after market pump? clogged fuel filter? define "getting on it". if you are letting off the gas to get on it then you are invoking the accelerator pump and that means you are getting a fuel starvation problem. this could be caused by the fuel filter, carb screens, and/or gummed up carb. if not then you could be running rich due to a non regulated aftermarket pump. i would lean more towards a fuel starvation problem but need more info for a good hard diagnosis.

Check the entire fuel system, from the tank to the carb...sounds like starvation and you need to be careful about lean out...that and heat are the main killers of rotaries

My 85GSL does that: at 4000 it stutters and stumbles 'til I pump it. Also, I get poor mileage around town, but good on the hiway. I just bought this car, so I don't know it's history, but all the fluids were dirty (but it only had 49k, so I bought it). Also, doesn't seem to be as powerful as my 83GS, which only I have driven.

DUDE, i was just about to start a new thread, this EXACT same thing happened to me tonight. its done it once before about a month ago, and it was around 5300rpms, tonight, at crusing speed on the high way around 3500-4k, it started sputtering, and if i gave it more gas, it sounds like the motor wasnt even running (and i have a LOUD *** exhaust) i was really worried about it leaning out and detonating. it would do it for around a minute or two, then stop for awhile, then do it, then stop. and i was on the high way so it was a real big problem not being able to hold a constant speed. my dad said it might be something in the fuel, as others have stated here. im hoping it will just be a fuel filter or something, and i didnt cause any damage to my motor with leaning out. i didnt look at my cat to see if it was red (running a generic high flow cat right after the racing beat header)
i dont know, this ******* sucks..

Assuming your cats aren't clogged up, I would think about your secondaries at that rpm range. Butterflies open but no gas thru the jets would give you a lean mix and get even worse if you floor it from there. Bad cats will prevent exhaust flow and limit your higher rpms.

i fixed the problem.. you should of SEEN how black my fuel filter was. my girlfriend got a nice digi for x-mas so ill try to post a picture when i can. i couldnt even blow through the filter. i shook it up a little and a LITTLE squirt came out. i put a new one in and it runs prefectly fine now. i suggest checking this out.

Glad you got 'er figured out, and thanks for posting the solution to your problem. Seems like the fuel system is the Achilles' heel of these cars. I've certainly had my share of fuel-related problems, but then my car sat for ten years! -WG

Secondaries was going to be my 1st guess, too, in which case I would have asked if any of the many carb cleaners are any good for this problem. Meanwhile, I go check the filter (when the rain stops).

I use them, but I can't be sure if they work. Seems like a quick and cheap way to fix minor problems and I believe I have had some success (no endorcement). Once for me, and I have heard from others, that it made a problem worse. In my case some of the debri in the carb let loose in flakes and clogged the jets. It didn't get better until I opened it up. A lot of crap can settle to the bottom and not affect anything unless it gets stirred up. Mostly I use them as a prevenative.

Not too hard but not easy, lots of linkage to deal with. You will likely need a new gasket because half will stick to the top and half to the bottom, & lots of very thin pieces. I have done it "on the car", but I prefer to remove the carb and intake together, then seperate, then rebuild. Needs more gaskets and O rings, but allows for a better job to be done.
