Question Engine dying on braking and accelerating...

I have an 84 GSL Automatic that tends to stall and eventually die when I am on the highway and go through an off ramp.

I brake and slow down... everything works fine, but when I press the accelerator, the engine dies (not every time, just sometimes). It's quite annoying and embarassing..

If anyone knows why... it would be a great help...

Some one on #RX7 on efnet said it may be a vacuum hose or something not attached right... dunno about that..

I had the same problem with my 85, but it wasn't a automatic. Basically this is what i tried to fix it.
1) Start of with checking the carb, spray carb cleaner around all the the vacuum hoses when the car is running, and see if the rpms jump. If they do, replace the hose you sprayed.
2) I rebuilt my carb, helped the problem a little, but it didn't ix it.
3) Change your fuel filter, air filter, plugs and wires. The best thing i did was get the 8.5 mm wires from rx7.com and they seemed to almost eliminate the problem. They atleast brought back a little power that i had lost.
4) If nothing else works, try turning your idle speed up just a tad.

In general, its just a pain in the *** problem, hope one of these help.

hmmm

how much did you pay to have your carb rebuilt? i've heard its expensive and it's almost cheaper to buy a new one....

i just had my carb cleaned, but the floats weren't adjusted or touched...

just rebuild it yourself. that would be a hell of a lot cheaper than paying someone else to do it

UPDATE

Ok, I took the car out for a test drive... it died on me again... when I took a left hand turn... and then I thought about the few times (that i can remember) when it died and they were all while making left hand turns.

Then I thought about it... and it never died on me when I slowed down and accel'd only when turning... then I thought about it.. and my power steering is really really weak (and funny feeling) but here's the wierd thing... I am full of steering fluid... do you guys think that may make a difference?

anything is possible. but i donot really know how powersteering could affect power, and make the car die..

but if that is the case...just another reason to go with a manual steering rack.

Ok, maybe the power steering pump is loading down the engine so when you try and re-accelerate the pump has too much drag on it, and then engine cant handle it so it dies...that could be it. You could check that by taking off your power steering pump belt and trying whatever makes it die. Obviously, if it doesnt die, youve found the problem . I was also thinking (and I dont know anything about the auto 7's) that maybe it could have something to do with your auto tranny kick-down linkage thingamabob (if these even have one ), I dont know how, but I just thought Id throw the idea out there...

You say the car seemz to die when u push on the gas. What does it idle at? when warm... Dont attempt to rebuild that carb you will seriously regret that. Seen what you can do before you go down that road. Keep us posted.

What's wrong with rebuilding a Nikki? I did mine, it was very straightforward.
just my opinion,

Yea, it does when warm (driving for 10 minutes *at least*). It also tends to die when I am sitting still and I engage drive (automatic tranny). Or if I am sitting at a stop light and the light turns green and I just move my foot from the brake to the accel. It's like it's... dying... or not catching... it's really annoying/embarrasing, etc. The car's not very zippy for the first 5mph... very sluggish.
