Engine Cleaning and Painting

OKaiieeee,

I am removing my engine for some major service (cracked water seal) and i want to make it all spiffy looking.

i have a few questions though:

1. how do i clean the engine? It has some (not alot) but soem outer rust and a **** load of oil and gunk. Is there anything out there that is fast acting, non-fuming and doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

2. Painting: I want to paint the engine (metalic green in the end) but I want to do the 2 spark plug housings first (not sure what they are called, but the part of the engine with the spark plug holes in them) and do them in metallic green and the other part in a high gloss silver or black (black would be cool) my question is, what is the best paint for this? and where can I get it?

that about covers it, any input on either of the topics would be great.

cheers'

Let it soak in hot soapy water for a while and srub it after a while. Then go to a car wash and use a pressure washer to clean them really good. Paint sticks really good after all this. All depends on how good you want it to stick.

I have used and heard others use Simple Green with good results. I have also used CD2 Engine cleaner which is zero effort and just as good results. $6 at my local Target/Kmart/Walmart or auto parts store. I have some CD2 that I need to use on my Seven and will this spring. The engine bay really needs help.

I use engine degreser, simple green, metal, brass and soft bristle brushes, scrub, tons of elbow grease
rinse, repeat as nessary.

for paint, I use engine enamel, the 500 degree stuff, works great, just make sure you have a clean surface, and it sticks like glue, make many thin coats.
I have never paint the rotor housings (where the plugs are)
So I can't say what to do there.
take yer time, and keep a few rags and a razor blade handy
I did one in car, OUCH! and one on engine stand
on the engine stand, I didn't mask off anything, just spray into cap, brush on, with steady hand.

So what would be the best way to paint it? Fully assembled masked off, with the housings apart and just mask off the mating surfaces, maybe with them apart and a brush? I dont know...I was thinking I wanna go for the black/yellow "killer bee" look to match my yellow vacuum lines, yellow sparkplug wires and other yellow accents under the hood.

I used a gallon of Castrol Super Clean concentrate for engines. It works really well, but it does have one flaw. If you get it on any metal that is prone to rusting, it WILL start rusting very quickly. So just spray a little WD-40 on the metal and wipe it around with a rag to prevent rust buildup - or you can use a rust oxidizer if rust was there previous to the cleaning.
