Engine - Choke Problems
I have a 1982 RX7 with 30000 miles on it. I start it up in the morning and i pull the choke out and the rpm's never usually make it to 2000 because the it fluctuates at just over 1000 back and forth. I also was driving it the other day and when i stopped and sat in neutral the engine rpms went down to 100 and it died then came back then died again. I dont know what the problem is but i was wondering if anybody had any advie on what the problem might be. Any help would be appreciated! thanks!

hello i have an 82 first generation rx7 and i have been having trouble now for a couple months with it producing blue smoke when i start it with the choke all the way out. I think there might be something wrong with the carburetor that is making the mixture too rich. After you start it up and hold the gas down for a while though it smooths out and quits shooting this nasty blue smoke. The only other way i counter it is by holding the gas pedal down a 1/4 of the way with the choke and sometimes it wont do it then but sometimes it will. If anyone has any information on this i would appreciate all comments! thanks a lot!

Blue smoke ussually indicates oil is being burned off. Sense its only does it when it starts I would think that you have a small leak into one or both of your rotor housings. You can test this by pulling your plugs and turning your rotor counterclockwise if your looking at your car. If oil or some liquid poors out then you got a leak. Do this after a the car has been sitting for a while.

I personally don't use the choke at all to start the car....two pumps, wait ten seconds and then crank it...it catches immediately and then I feather the throttle while I set the choke to 1000 RPM.
Black smoke = carburetor.
Blue smoke/off white smoke = oil
White smoke with sweet smell = coolant getting toasted and spit out exhaust.
Let me see if I can dig up my old posting on how to set the choke with the carb staying on the car.
