I spent the better part of the weekend tracing what a previous owner had done to my car. The rat's nest was long gone, but I found all the wiring and connectors taped up to the rest of the harness. They were pretty well hidden, but I am getting rid of them, as I have no intentions of ever putting the nest back on this car (TX emissions testing be damned!). Checked out my brother's 85 (streetported, Holley, header, etc), and a previous owner had completely removed all the rat's nest wiring, all the way to the big black connector on the driver's inner fenderwell. Looked pretty decent, and that's what I plan on doing...but even cleaner. Pics will come when I get around to it, but I may wait a bit until all my wiring installs are done (ignition, e-fan, etc).
