Emissions Test Failed then passed

Well here is the car:
85 SE I normally run RB headers, pre silencer and muffler. I take them off for my test and drop back on my factory collector and Bonez cat. I do the plugs, O2 and oil change. I know she runs rich so I pick up an electric airpump and wire her up as my factory one has been long taken off. I get to the emissions place turn the air pump on and test, here are the results:

HC Limit 385 Pass 268....CO Limit 1.23 Fail...3.17 NOx Limit 2692 PASS...89

I quess my peice of **** FORD air pump died!!

So i do a little research and deside to calibrate the TBS and adjust my idle up a little bit and I drop in 11/2 gallons of denatured alcohol.

Results: HC 78 CO .02 (yes from 3.17 to 0.02!) NOx 313

I will sing the praises of alcohol of emissions from now on!!!!!!!

Now time to take that crap off and go back to running rich and poluting thew world. This will be my last emissions test ever as 85's in CT will become exempt in 2 years.

Glad to hear it passed. That HC limit is way higher than the NJ limit for my 83.... Strange...
Mine just passed as well, first try, no tricks, didn't even change the 10k miles 2 year old spark plugs haha.

So how exactly do you get your car to pass with denatured alcohol? Is there a certain ratio of gas to alcohol that I want to use?

If i put my stock exhaust back on and hook up my airpump would I be able to pass with alcohol? (No rats nest)

haha I know, I usually change them after like 5000 miles, surprisingly it still runs good, and I've pulled the plugs a few times, they are in very good shape... Still due to be changed though

From what I have read, its like a gallon of alcohol with a 1/4 tank. I did not have any other emissions stuff on besides the cat. The air pump was actually not working.

Sean, when you coming up?? You should come to the Palisades meet on the 30th.
