WackyRacer, is this rolling smog machine a SoCal thing? I haven't heard/seen anything about such a program in the bay area.

I've seenthem in the San Fernando Valley and the LA basin beofre. It's not highly publicized.

They're so clever about it, too... always cited at the top of an on-ramp; no recourse in direction, and you're sure to pass by it at or near WOT, unless you want to die while merging.

street or freeway, the rolling smog machine is accompanied by at least one CHP patrol car. they will pick any cars/vehicles they want. There were several discussion about this issue that its not mandatory, but a random test but who know what will happen when you dont pass.

i havent ever seen one of these smog trucks in norcal, nor have i heard of one since the 90's, and that was in SAC...

what they do here, to all of my s13/s14 friends is just pull em over and give em a ticket to go see the smog referee...

ive had a couple friends get the hood popped on the rx7's, the famous one is where the cop saw the C.A.R.B. sticker and asked where the carburator was....

well i never thought id be one of those guys that sells the car cuz he cant fix it, and i still dont think i am. I did, however, sell the car this morning because i needed to get it out of the street, and i need the money for my other cars. I do hope to one day get another 7, but it will have to wait until i'm not stuck living with my parents because of financial deficiencies.

to test the ACV pull the big hose on the passenger side of the car going from the acv to the air cleaner assy. if you feel air coming out of it when you rev past 2500 then your acv needs to be replaced. make sure you get the federal or california acv depending on where your car is from.

since you're not that far off try adding some denatured alcohol. i dont have the ratio mix off the top of my head. search for it. that should get you by the test at least.

Yes, car is sold. The post above citing air coming from the inlet hose to the acv tells me that this was the problem afterall. There was air coming from that hose at all times. Im actually glad the responses continued because this was definitely not the last 7 i'll have and now i know for next time I do appreciate all of the help and advice. I think i've got the rotary itch now and i'm having thoughts of putting one in the s10 i bought haha.
