Electrical question, how simple can it be made.

Well after removing the emissions, getting a new intake and carb. I have alot of extra wiring laying about. So basically what I want to know is how simple can I make the electrical(going to the motor) and still have it run, have ac, and all my guages works. I looked at the diagrams in my manual and I am not an electrical guiness so I couldnt tell what goes to what.

heres what I know I needd(well at least I think)
All grounds and power cables, from the battery and from the mainfuse block
All the wirering from the key switch and out(if something can go let me know)
And thats about all I know

What I am trying to ask in a nut shell is I am just trying to clean things up so I know where everything goes before I pull the motor for rebuild, and to paint the bay.

What's the new carb?

There's not much cabling going to the motor, and you pretty much need it all. The cabling's basically for sensors and valves. If you've lost the rat's nest, you can probably make up a new loom minus the connections for the valves. I'm in the process of doing this. No rats nest, but still have the wiring loom there. Haven't seen an 85 engine bay, but am assuming the wiring to the rats nest and carb are similar. That's about all you could get rid of I suspect.

Im running an Edelbrok carb and Rb intake. And from my experiences(my truck) I ran like 10 wires. But thats a ford in 1979. Im just not really sure what all needs to stay and what needs to go. Like the major stuff I know. But like the smaller things im not to sure of. Just dont want to **** up.

So the whole loom that goes to the rats nest and carb can pretty much go then. I have feeling that the primitive ecu uses feedback from some of these, but haven't got to the point where I need to know yet. If oyu want, I'll have a look at the FSM tonight. But I suspect it can all go. An easy way to find out is obviously just drive the car with the loom disconnected. The only area I was concerned about was that the ECU disabled the trailing spark in some situations. I got around that by building a new ignition system rather than figuring it out. Don't know if your edelbrock has solenoids for idle and richer or not. That may be the only thing you need to work. I could be talking out my **** as it's about 10 months since I last looked at it. I'll check the FSM.

Well I would drive teh car except for its pretty much stripped getting ready for paint. Im just doing all the electrical now because its the last thing to come off the car and I want it mocked up before I pull it out. That way when i redo it I have a baseline of where everything goes and what goes to what. Then I am going to make a new harness offf of that.

I heard PAINLESS makes a kit is this true I looked on there sire and didnt see it unless I missed it or its just a universal kit.

I found this link thru Google:

https://www.rx7club.com/sitemap/t-491241.html

towards the bottom, a guy 'jayroc' says he's going to use one. That's about all. I can't see anything on Painless's sight about something specific for the RX7 either.

Seriously, unless your Edelbrock has idle or richer solenoids on it, that whole wiring loom can go I reckon. Even if it does, they're probably going to need to operate at different variables anyway. But I can't say for sure. I'll check the FSM tonight.

If the rat's nest is gone you can eliminate all wires from the engine loom except for the alternator, oil pressure sender and coolant temp sender. I usually just snip off all the ones I don't need at the connector.

When I eliminated my rats nest, I sat down with the FSM in hand and unpinned every wire I didn't need from the connector, in the bay, going to the ecu. Iirc, I was down to 3 wires on that harness. Cleaned up the bay nicely.

If you are keeping your ac, you will need the solinoid, wiring and vacuum for that, plus whatever else it needs to work.

Cool that was the info I was looking for. My old computer kicked the bucket the other day and I lost all my manuals. Anyone got a link to the FSM real quick. Thanks for the info again.

What about the thermosensor in the waterpump housing for the choke?
Also the bowl vent on the carb?

I just did my harness the other day and I left these in, along with the 2 in the oil pan, one is for oil level?, whats the other in the pan?

I'm going to run the alt, t-sensor, and bowl vent clipped under the carb tray, and the oil press, water temp, ac sol, and oilpan twins over the trans and split off forward to their to destinations.
