Electric Supercharger?

I have a 12A engine and i would like to get something that give the engine a little boost but not spend 1000 or more. i know electric super/turbo chargers do not give nearly as much power as a mechanically driven one would.

Are they any good? If they do indeed provide boost how much boost would it make? Would i need to get a better fuel pump to feed the engine better?

I doubt you will find one and stay under your budget. I belive they are over $3k just for the unit not including your carb prep, plumbing, fuel pump, ect........

I know i will get flamed for this .. ricer mod etc but here is some of the stuff im lookin at. http://motors.search.ebay.com/electr...r_W0QQfromZR40

I am aware they wont provide even 5psi of boost. Im just lookin for something that will give it a little kick in the rear when it needs it. If you look how they work : Cone filter, blower powered by a small eletric motor they seem very easy to upgrade just get a bigger eletric motor and more powerful fan ito provide more CFMS am i right? It just seems like a good cheap idea that will our sevens a little more power without spending lots of money.

Those ones on eBay will do nothing, seriously, take that $100 and save it for some real boost.

Those motors are originally meant for bilge blowers on boats to vent fumes. It will not work under pressure, you can cover one side, and the motor will spin freely not moving any air at all. If anything, it may help at idle, but it will definately ruin any mid to top end power.

If you really want one, go to any boat store, they go for like $15 cdn. lol

They will add a few hp down low. in the open air they tend to flow enough air and usually at 1-3psi.... but cramming air into an engine is much different. I have seen REAL dyno pulls w and w/o then..... most gained 1-4 hp below 3k and lost 3-5 above 4k.... they are a rip off. as are the tornado thing on tv, lost of 3-4hp over entire rpm range, and a loss of about 2 mpg. If it sounds too good to be true or too easy to work, it probly is..... leaf blowers do work though.... so just duct tape an electric one in there.

Don't even think about using these things. As mentioned, a REAL electric supercharger will cost a LOT of money. Even then, they aren't worth getting. I researched these a little, and the one I've found uses 3 starter motors mounted to a roots type supercharger that can only push 8psi for 20 or 30 seconds at a time. Works kind of like a nitrous shot. Quite a waste of money if you ask me. It would put so much strain on your electrical system that you'd probably be replacing batteries and alternators on a regular basis. Your better off putting your car on the bottle with a 100hp shot. Probably save a lot of money in the end, even if you do blow up your engine.

best power for the money is nitrous. isnt too expensive, and you can decide what size shot to use. some people wont use it, other will, its your choice

AN ELECTRIC PIECE OF **** ON YOUR INTAKE DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES EVERYONE NEEDS TO TELL THIS TO YOU FOR IT TO GET THROUGH YOUR HEAD. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO GAIN. I CAN TAKE A **** IN MY GAS TANK AND USE DYNO GRAPHS TO PROVE IT BOOSTS POWER BUT IT DOESN'T.

Jesus. I haven't yelled like that since school.....

suckers. you should be banned for asking and not searching first. allways search before you ask. you will notice that this crappy idea has come about way to often and they do nothing. The leaf blower as a fan powered ay 5hp gas engine those things usually flow 10,000 cfm of course one of those will make power not some cheese electric fan that flows 20-40cfm. The stock nikki flows about 350cfm...

truthfully it probly works, they are pushing it but it's not complete bs. but read how much power even the basic one takes "This unit draws 60 AMPS of current at 13.88 volts" .... 60 amps, hmmm the alternator in fb's is rated at what again.... 50, 55, somethin around there..... 5hp for killing your alternator in under a month, not a good trade. even with a 100 amp alternator you'd be taxing your electrical system at anything below 2k-3k.... idle and your car dies b/c of your electric s/c.... fun stuff there

Think of the boat blowers this way. Picture Jim Cantore on a beach during a hurricane. He plugs in a window fan and sticks in front of himself to get more air. Yea right! If anything the blades that are spinning slower than the hurricane wind will reduce the airflow....

the thing only runs when u punch it. So it wouldnt be using any power at idle.

Hate to keep this thread going but.... a friend of mine bought and used one of these (at a cheaper price in the hope of being an importer of them to Australia) and it was crap no slower no faster just a little whine noise on WOT when they switch on. We pulled it apart in the hope of making them and ripping foolish crew off, like honda dreamers. It was basically a boat bilge style with a more solid fan (not softer plastic like the bilges we found) and a strong RC style motor. This one also had a SCREEN to catch the blades if they shatter (like on a skyline airflow meter) which would reduce airflow. We didn't bother trying to make them in the end they just suck too hard!

science is the answer

i hate to keep this going as well, but i felt the need to point out that one day, i was bored in math class when i decided to work out how much energy (peak) it would take to force feed 15 psi into a 12a @ 7krpm (assuming 100% effiency). i cant remember the exact number byut it was on the order of 8 to 10 kilowatts.. 15 HP. so, if you were to buy an electric supercharger and expect 1/3 that boost at 7krpm it would consume 3kW, or about 300 amperes (assuming a little energy loss in the motor)
at 3.5krpm that would only be around 150 amps.

i hope that everyone validate the claims of supercharger manufacturers.... *grin*
