Is that not a normal range?

Rotaries burn super hot, which is why we burn through crappy exhaust

I have my egt mounted 6" from the exhaust port and I tune the car to run at 1650 degrees, as per Jesse Prather from Prather Racing.

really 1650 seams really high. Mine I located where it collects. Are you running a 2 gauge setup?

Thats seems pretty normal for hard driving, 1600 would be closer to what you want it at. People have claimed up to around 2000. I have not run mine yet, but I know that on the FSAE engine that I work on, it goes to about 750 or so, but thats piston engine and I've been told on that engine about 850, you can start melting things like something they call valves

There was a crazy thread about temps. It's not that the engine is burning more fuel or producing more energy. But it's small so where is the thermal gonna go? A bigger engine can absorb more energy. It you added a lot more metal like the 20-60+ other moving parts a Piston engine can have. Then there is more mass to absorb the energy. Which of course is converted to heat.

our engines get so hot because of the way the rotary works. when the exhaust ports are opening there is still burnt gas in the combustion chambers being forced out in to the exhaust tubing. burning gas tends to be hot as it is. our engines have been recorded to be getting all the way to 2100 degrees at wot. and i guess we are kind of lucky though that the engines we use dont have the side housing exhaust ports. with those engines the is less potential for really high horse power numbers to be produced.

If you are the 1500 to 1800 degree range, you are in pretty good shape. You can get more horse power with a leaner tune (to a point) which will give you a hotter temp. The challenge is that if you run it on the hotter side (leaner and more power) you begin to lose service life of the engine. For the most part my car is just an autocross car, so I do not mind running a bit on the hot side.
