Egt ?

Hey guys is a 1700 deg. guage sweep enough for a rotary? How far down the exhaust stream should I place the probe? I'm running a roadrace header and was thinking of placing the probe on my collector coz I dont really want to drill the header but I'll put it onto the header if I have to. I'm guessing a tune to around 1450 should be fine. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Ed

Do you have a catalytic converter on your setup? If so, I'm thinking maybe just before that, altho I must admit I haven't dealt with pyrometer setups myself so I wouldn't know off-hand. But, I honestly think somewhere near the motor would do just fine, if you don't want to go into your collector.

I use one that goes up to 1800, but people are saying now that 1650 is around ideal temp. mount it 22" down from exhaust port, that puts it right in front of the rear flange.

Thats where mine are also. Mine is also the one that goes to 1800. Dual probe and dual sweep gauge. Aircraft Spruce sells them at a reasonable price, and its a Westech gauge. Good quality.

I was actually looking at the Westach since I had it on my COUGH! Mitsubishi Starion, COUGH! The one I used was the 1700 with the single probe. I had the probe right on the turbo manifold. Okay so I'll place the probe right after my header(road race) flange going to the collector. What kind of temps are you guys seeing? Oh BTW no cats here! LOL!

Thanks, Ed

I just ordered this. I couldnt find any that went higher other than the square one which reads up to 1900. This should be okay right?

Drivefast7, is 1650 a target point?
Thanks, Ed

It is another tuning tool, usually used in conjuction with a wideband. Usually used with turbo setups, it can also tell you if you are running rich.

closer to the engine or within 6 inches, the better. Most people will put it on the header's "wye" to those who are running a single exhaust.

But for dual, I have 1 on each pipe. For single gauge set-up, Im also getting complicting info on which pipe to install it (front or rear rotor).

Mel, what temps are you seeing? Also do you have a rough target temp?

Thanks, Ed

I was running about 1700 using an old AEM. But broke it since it was not permanently mounted. I owned several mazda so I was it went from one car to another when tuning. I think I will buy an airspruce also since the price is reasonable.

I have been told that 1700 is your target temp for the most power.

The hotter it is the leaner the AF
Cooler and it is Fat.

I would say if just getting one to put it in the rear rotor, The rear is the one that most offten fails.

I think I saw a 2-in-1 gauge in their websiteIm not a big fan of buying things on-line so I will be heading to a local airspruce dealer tomorrow.

I use the dual probe egt by westech. I want 1 probe per pipe so I can see if any rotor is overly rich or lean.

The ONLY temp to shoot for I have ever heard is: 1650 is the target after powering thru 3rd gear and winding thru 4th gear all at WOT. Front straightaways at road courses are great for this!!!!

It's tough to tune using EGT's, it doesn't respond as quickly as an air fuel meter. I use it more to see the general rich / leanness of the motor. Not unheard of for one rotor to want a little more gas than another and this is a good way to find out if u got one probe per rotor. Wideband O2 sensors in tailpipe on the dyno won't tell you that since the exhaust from both rotors is mixed into one tailpipe sensor...........

Thanks, Ed
