I know a little about this car...

The history of the 84 GSL-SE on eBay is the original owner purchased it at McKay Mazda here in Jefferson City, MO back in '83 or "84. Soon after he moved to FL. He drove it regularly for the 1st year and then not much since. He took excellent care of the car as to not let it set up. He maintained it exceptionally well. He DID NOT store it on carpet like the ad says, but he was extremely careful with the 7 and it was absolutely flawless when he sold it to the current owner in Cincinnati last year for $9500. The current owner is looking to purchase a 65 Mustang which is why he is selling. From what I can recall, this is accurate. The reason I know...Last year I had a GSL-SE for sale on Ebay and this cars original owner emailed me stating he had a GSL-SE just like mine. He sent me pics and we got to talking...
Anyway, I shot him an email yesterday asking if this was his car and it is.

that ebay car

is beautiful.

i have two SE's in excellent condition and I would buy it for 8-9k if I did not have the two. Have read 3 different mag articles within the past 6 months regarding new classics, all 3 mags (1 a British Classic car mag did a full 4 page report) mention the rx7 as an appreciating classic. While thats no reason to buy, the fact that clean SE's are becoming more rare and 80's cars will soon be antique, that price for a reliable used car is good.

I now of 8k being paid for an 84 se with 23k miles.

Now 9300 with a couple of days left. This will help raise the bar for super clean FB's.

Looks good but one thing sticks out to me

a little over 22,000 miles in 21 years? Come on, how many times has the odometer rolled over, or when was it replaced? and if he is lieing about that, what else is he not telling you?

You think so? Even if you have unlimited amounts of "free" time/labor, the parts and materials would cost more than that.

If you think you can do it, I'll be standing in line to buy it from you, but the quality of restoration better be first-rate.

It depends on condition and modifications, and of course the seller. At one extreme you can pick them up for $3k-6k, even running.

For comparison purposes, the 3rd gen (auction ref on p.1) in similar unmodified, original condition with 19,000 miles had reserve of $26,000.

I've budgeted $10k for mine, and I think it's going to be tough to do everything I want for that much money, and I'm shopping around and getting as many deals as I can.

Comparing this car to a "street ported first gen" or an FD is an irrelevant comparison.

The reasons a person would purchase an older RX7 in stock, unmolested, pristine condition are quite different that the reasons that would motivate a person to buy a more contemporary or modified RX7.

Why not compare it to another generation RX-7? As the owner of a number of "collector" sports cars, I think it is a valid comparison. A 21-year-old S3, or 12-year-old S6 RX-7 both in pristine stock condition are desirable for the same reasons. That particular FD is a nearly flawless original, and unmodified. You don't buy either one for the same reasons as a street ported or modified RX-7 of any generation. The fact is, a price premium exists for both versions of RX-7s in that condition. That is a "good thing" for all RX-7 owners.

I am buying an 84 -SE in two weeks from a local person. The car has officially 54,206 miles on the chassis, and original engine. The body has only one ding on the rear quarter panel that could be pulled without sacrificing the paint, it does have chips from rocks(but what car does not that is this old). In my eyes, the body is in GREAT shape. The engine runs VERY strong, the transmission shifts as smooth as butter, everything operates on the car perfectly, minus the radio, and the damn e-brake light stays on.

Body is brown, and interior is brown.

In other words, I am STEALING the car from him. Kelley Blue Book on private seller is 2420. He is also going to put the car through inspection, get 4 brand new tires of MY choice, and anything that is required for inspection, he will be doing.

I am STEALING, again, the car from him for 2,500. And I would even be willing to pay 4k for the car.

So this ebay car, could EASILY go for 10k in my eyes. These cars are not around anymore with such low miles, they are going to get eaten up by collectors, and enthusiasts in the next five years. Same thing will happen with FC's, and FD's eventually. Just how it is with older cars from the 1900's to the 1970's.
