E-Fan Again

Yes yes, this topic has been talked about alot. Every time it is talked about all i hear is Derale and Black Magic, or Taurus/Fiero. Well i was wondering what other brands(new) there are that will fit very easily on an -SE radiator and gets the job done. 200 for a Blackmagic fan seems kinda pricy to me. Taurus/fiero just doesnt look that good, plus its a used part, may fail. So anyone got some suggestions, such as the VB one, ive never heard good or bad about their Fan. Any help would be usefull ive got some spare change lyin around

I bought and use a 16" fan from the local auto parts store. Works fine on the racecar, and used it on a streetcar without problems. It was $70 or so.

Well, Fiero/Taurus fan won't fit an SE. I just used the Autozone house brand, and it was big enough to duct down over my oil cooler.

Measure.

Measure your radiator, up, down and both diagonals. Measure the gap between the radiator and the pulleys.

Now go to the scrapyard and find a fan that is not more than those dimensions. Ideally 1"-2" smaller than what you measured because things move and flex.

I am looking for an electric fan as well. Is the gsl-se different than an '84 gsl? Or will the autozone 16" fan work? Any answers are appreciated.

The 16" fan they sell will work for any of our cars. I think its made by Imperial. Heres a page I found detailing mounting and such on a Ford.

Is there a walkthrough on how you put yours in and what all it takes to get it up and running carl? I would greatly appreciate some pics and/or info. I want to put in an electric fan asap.

Zip ties work great for mounting, honestly. They're strong and take heat quite well.

The Black Magic Fan actually hangs down below the radiator; assiting in pulling cooling air through the oil cooler, too. The rated 2800 CFM is awesome.

Even though they may work well, they look really cheap. I want my engine bay to be something i LIKE to look at, not an eyesore. Also, about the black magic fan, im not looking into something thats gonna cost me $200 or so when i bought the car for $250. I think i will go the way of the autozone fan that carl suggested. It fits my budget better and gets the job done and my horsepower back.

e-fan

An issue I haven't seen addressed with the Black Magic 150 is the fact that the shroud on this fan is 5" narrower than the radiator. This leaves 2 and a half inches on each side of the radiator that doesn't have any air pull. Is this simply not an issue because of the cfm of this fan or has anyone addressed this by modifying the sides of the shroud to pull air through the entire radiator.

The second issue I forsee is that the lower radiator hose isn't going to have the clearance with the Magic 150 that it had with the original shroud. Problem? I'm still looking at brand new parts on the kitchen floor (new radiator and Magic 150) so I have all my options open here yet, including sending parts back and going with plan B.

The new radiator I have is from Britich Victoria so any feedback of that particuliar piece of hardware would be real good.

And finally I have a new water pump (I really don't want to ever have to worry about cooling again, yep, I'm replacing the thermostat), These parts from British Victoria also. Does anyone have feedback on these parts.

Thanks

When i was at Rotary Revolution CPRacing had like 10 inch fans, one on each car. I asked them and they said it cools that 10 square inches enough to keep the engine cool, because all the liquid has to pass through that spot anyways, so it just pulls a little more CFM than one that covers the entire radiator would need to, bu tnot much they say

I went and looked at the Imperial fan at Autozone, 80 bucks, plus 20 for the wiring with the thermostat setup. It will be a close fit in my -SE once i get it, gotta wait for a paycheck

Frankly, I'd trust an OEM fan from the wrecking yard before I'd trust a generic Auto Zone cheapie. The OEM fans rarely die, and they tend to move some fairly serious air.
If it'll fit, I hear that the Lincoln Mark 8 fan is the ****. Mustang fans slightly less so. Both are like in the 18" or so range, IIRC.
I have two 12" or !3" fans (I forget) on my '70 Olds Cutlass (V8) from a mid-to-late-80s Buick Regal (FWD), and they work just fine at cooling the beast, even with AC. They'll hold a shop rag to the grille:

Incidentally, I'm also the guy that did the installation at http://www.wankel.net/registry/1st/TimSchuh/efan/

Black Magics rock! (But you pay for it...)
