Dumb question??

I don't have access to my car as I am out of town but I can post pictures later. But, here is my question and sorry if it's a repeat question but I could not find the specific question and answer by searching previous threads: I have an A12 engine in a Triumph Spitfire that is setup for road racing. I purchased the car recently. Seems to run good and compression is good. The car has a coil that is connected directly to the distributer and there are 2 wires running from the distributer to the lower 2 plugs. There are no wires running to the top 2 plugs so they are not being used. There is a second gen igniter on the car/firewall that has the capability or post for two spark plug wires. There are no spark plug wires hooked to the igniter. My question is, could I use that igniter to power the 2 top plugs? I am thinking maybe that is how they had it set up originally. thanks for your thoughts and advice.

What you have is only the leading ignition setup via a normal single post coil and using the
dizzy. You can run without trailing at all (top plugs disconnected ) with very little power lost.

That second coil with 2 connectors on it is a 2G coil. I suspect the PO was using that to do a
DFIS to the leading coils and it maybe burned out so he put in the regular coil and went back
to using the dizzy.

Pics would help us help you better for sure.

I see what you have by looking at your older thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/new-member-r...eeded-1094093/

Based on that picture I bet the 2G coil was for the leading and the single coil was for the trailing
and always went thru the dizzy. For whatever reason the 2G coil was disconnected and the
trailing coil was wired to be leading and the leads were moved on the dizzy.

Question is why is the 2G coil disconnected?

I actually run a very similar setup now. I use a 2G for leading and a TFI coil for trailing which
goes thru trhe dizzy. I used to run 2 TFI for leading only and didn't even run trailing for a
couple of years because lazy.

TGFarrell, Perhaps you could offer some advice (see attached photos). Here is what I have:

1. I pulled the ignition wiring untaped it and laid it out as you can see in the pictures.

2. The Red taped wire was connected to a relay that was connected to the starter solenoid.

3. The yellow taped wires connected to the two distributer plugs on the front and passenger side of the distributer.

4. The green taped wires connected to the positive and negative posted on the coil.

5. The black box with the white tape on it is, I guess, some type of electronic ignition trigger device (?).

6. The black wire to the right of the #5 above black box was connected to a ground.

7. The red wire to the right of the #6 above black wire was not connected to anything.

8. The yellow wire to the right of the #7 above red wire actually is connected to the wire that goes to one of the plugs on the distributer.

9. The last but not least, there is a power cable and a wire from the black box to the igniter.

10. I have also included some photos of the distributer. There were only plug wires going to the lower 2 plugs.

So... what do you think? What would I need to do to be able to run the igniters on the leading/lower plugs and the coil on the top plugs? Or, do you advise something else.

Thanks
Bill

I would ditch the existing wiring and then figure out what you have there thats good and then
rewire everything. That black box maybe some sort of ignition box or igniter. Also don't confuse
and igniter with a coil. The igniter is basically a large transistor that amplifies the dizzy signal
from the magnetic pickup to fire the coil. The coil generates the spark that then goes to the plugs.

So I see a leading igniter on the dizzy in one of the pics. This is either a pass through, gutted
igniter going to your black box or its not in which case I'm not sure what the blackbox does.
