Drove the boinger RX-7

My god.

This thing sound like a crazy ****, and pulls like you wouldn't believe. I havent' floored it or rev'd it high as it's a new engine, but I have given it blips and it hauls ***. Anyone have any experience with a flex-a-lite mechanical fan blade? My electric ain't cuttin it.

I'd like to see the new Nissan 300 bhp V6 in a ReX if one insists on using a boinger.

Personally I'm still measuring up for a Renisis under the hood.

Hey Winnipeg, Id like to see some pics of the completed product. You got any? Can you give us a refresher of what all you have under the hood?

Whats the cost numbers on this project so far? I was honestly thinking of doing something kinda like this, except in a Z car, but I wanted to build up a big *** engine like that and drop in there...That would be sweet...Anyway, and info would be great.

Why sacrifice that lovely inline 6 in a Z? There are plenty of ways of tapping into more horsepower with that engine, as with a rotary. However, I did see a 240z with a Chevy 350 in it and have to admit it scared the crap out of many a local.

There's plenty of nice engine swaps for Z's and ZX's without resorting to a V8 and whilst still keeping it in the Nissan family so to speak. Personally I'd go for one of the RB series turbo 6's.

The RB series engines are the straight 6's used in Skylines and various other cars. Not even sure exactly how many variations of this engine there are as they range from 2l's to 3l's in both turbo and n/a form.

Used to have a 280ZX - that was when Nissan started to slide down the path of the Dark Side with heavier bodies and power crap - not as bad as the 1st gen 300ZX but getting there.

Still, as much as I love the cleaner styling of my GSL-SE, I miss the torque of that 2.8 litre 6 pack...

Where the 280zx's really that powerful? I used to race Turbo 280ZX's with my 12A, and absolutely destroy them. I am serious, I never had one even come close. Their turbos weren't even intercooled until the 1990 300zx TT. Although I still do like the looks of the 240 or 280z.

As for as torque, a little boost on your rotary will take care of that. As well as take care of many Mustangs, BMW's, Vette's, etc.

Manntis: are you talking about Darius's Blown LT1 powered 69 240. That thing is ******* nuts, easily the coolest car on the planet in my opinion.

There are videos of it on 3rotor.com
Video1: going like 60, he just starts smoking the tires for a few blocks,
Video 2: racing a superbike, he leads.

Check it out, it under speed kings in the video section.

hey Winnipeg85GSL I am condsidering doing that exact swap. Did you use the grannys' kit or make your own mounts? I heard that there are some issues clearing the steering - did you run into that. Does your hood close with a carb engine? I am torn between using a FI 302 with T5 from a foxbody or using an older carb engine.

How the swap good and how much of a budget did it take.

Thanks!

I had one of the spaces for a belt on the crankshaft pulley cut off to clear the steering a bit more, but it fit without cutting it too. I used Grannys mount adapters. The actual mounts are from a '71 Maverick. I also had to cut some of the bracing out from the hood for the air cleaner to fit. The T5 fit right through the stock hole. Whole project so far has probably been near 4k american, but i spent lots on the engine itself.

actually, this guy i knew in the Bronx put one in his Rx-7 YEARS, YEARS, YEARS ago ... he had to graft the Z's nose onto the Rx-7 though ... looked okay, but ... just not pure, know what i mean?

anyway, he was killing EVERYTHING (even a few Porsches) that he went up against. he eventually tubbed it out, and then i think he crashed it at a track in Jersey ...

...then he built a 911 Turbo for drag right?

Why? It's heavier than the SBF and has less power potential due to the smaller displacement. Less torque, too... which is the "my god" factor

edit: It's also physically larger, meaning less room underhood and more cooling problems since it'd be harder for the air to escape after it went through the radiator.

The SBF is really the ultimate swap engine.... very light, very compact, high power potential, easy to come by, and easy to find parts for.

I would imagine that going from a 1.1 litre rotary to a V8 would definitely kick you bakc in the seat.
