driving styles
I was wondering if how hard you excellerate and drive around town effects fuel consumption? My friend tells me rotars are as bad on fuel as v8's. Is that true? I was thinking they compared closer to a 6. Are there any mods I can do to increase fuel effiency? I hear a good tune always helps. I'll get that done shortly, but is there anything eles?

In my experience they are indeed comparable to V8's in fuel consumption. Other than a tune-up, replacing spark plugs as needed. Obviously driving style will affect consumption as well. If you like to floor it a lot like me, you don't get much mileage out of a tank...

I would say that rx7s get V8 gas mileage also, I'm usually wrapping the gears as well, but even when you're crusin' they use quite a bit. The gen 1 and 2 seem to get about the same.

My 7 ggot about 19 miles per gallon. It was completely stock, with a new tuneup. I shifted around 4 grand each time and had an occasional high rev moment cause u gotta let loose sometimes.

Since Mazda introduces the learn burn 12a in 1981 fuel consumption is far better than when the rotary got its poor reputation.
The official figures for a 1984 RX-7 are 19 mpg in the city and 24mpg on the highway. These are faily reliable figures for the average driver.
In practice if you stomp off every traffic light and out drag Honda Civic then youcan drop down to 16mpg. On the other hand if you cruise along a freeway listening to our favorite music you can get 28mpg. I get the best combination of performance and fuel economy by changing gear at 4,000rpm, long term you also get little engine wear. Another tip is never let your fuel drop below 1/4 tank as it minimises dirt messing up fuel supply.
As long as you keep up routine servicing, especially oil change there is nothing to do to improve consumption except wearing lighter boots.

In short yes they get about the same as a V8 in a simalar car. As by chance I have a V8 in my Rx-7 and get about the same milage as with my bad *** 1.1 101hp rotary engine. I think, am sure, a 325hp rotary will get much worse gas milage than my 325hp V8.

I get about 15.5 city, and as much as 20-21 highway (exclusively) on my SE, and this is less than I get with my Infiniti Q45 (a 4.5L V8, 278hp), so what you've heard is just about right.
In my experience, unless you're driving around town at 6k rpm all the time, your mileage from changing shift points isn't going to be noticeable. I seem to get the same mileage whether I'm trying to conserve or not. SE's have 15.0 gallon tanks, and I get about 230 miles per tank, on average.

i babied mine for a couple weeks cause of a lug nut issue,{fixed that bad boy thistime , drilled flanges and installed studs, no more vw bullshiiiit,} here the passed couple of days ive been beating it like a 14 year old that has just discovered his boner, and i can say about 10miles to gallon in town flogging it, thats with a full warmup about every time, in grandma mode it does 20 in town, so 50% less under the dankus foot.
