Driveshaft

You unbolt it at the diff, there are 4 bolts holding it onto the diff. Undo them and drop the driveshaft and slide it back toward the rear of the car. Don't forget to plug off the tailshaft of the trans to keep all the fluid from leaking out. You can use a topoff a can of carb cleaner to do this. rx7doctor

drain the trans first. especially if you're removing it. there is a drain plug on the bottom of the trans. not sure about the carb cleaner???????? but yeah, there are 4 bolts with nuts that hold the driveshaft to the diff. take them off, drop the driveshaft down. it'll flex at the front u-jont and pivot there as well. slide the driveshaft straight out. make sure you've drained the trans first.

Never used the top off a can of carb cleaner to block the tailshaft, fits perfectly. rx7doctor

If the driveshaft doesnt detach from the rear end, just simply start pulling the engine/tranny out. It will disconnect itself then. I personally have had problems with this in the 4 cars I have worked on (all FBs). Definitely good call on the carb cleaner cap.

yea, There are two styles. 84 85 that have bolts with nuts. and 79 - 83 that have the penion threaded. It is best if you jack up the rear and take out two of them, then take it out of gear and take off the brake, rotate until you can get the other two. you have to then push the shaft forward to clear the diff, drop it down and pull it out. Fluid will not leak out until the trans is tiped up.

Also I have had a few that were stuck to the diff very well. BFH will take care of it.

Don't forget to scribe a mark on both the driveshaft flange and the differential mounting so that you can put it back together in the same position. Otherwise you may get a vibration from the drivetrain.
