Drain old gas
Drain old gas
Fixing up an old 7 that hasn't been run in a long time. I'm gonna replace the fuel filter, but i think there's still bad gas that i need to drain but i can't find a drain plug. what should i do?
Well then, I think your left with no choice but to drop the tank (I hope it's not too full, if it is than be shure to put a jack under it) Just undo the two metal straps that hold it in place, it's a fairly self explanitory process once you get started.

Your gonna have to budge that plug, either that or drop the pan.
as for siphoning gas, thats a good idea too. I was thinking along the lines of a major tank cleanup (ie sludge removal) but I guess you could just siphon it out and change your fuel filter every so often for a while.

To get the old gas out. Disconnect the hose from the carb or at the metal line and put in a long hose, Put it in a jug and turn on the switch, The electric pump will run it out for you without any trouble.
Correct me if I am wrong, but a 1979 would be carburated, and the fuel pump should pump when the key is turned on, so the float bowl fills before you start the car. The 84-85 FUel Injected SEs fuel pump doesn't come on untill you start the car. Do you agree?
on the 84 and 5 12a cars the fuel pump only works when the engine is crainking 83 may be the same way. 79 to 82 will run with the switch on. I dont know about the EFI cars.
I use this method to drain the tanks in all my junk cars. did an 85 the same way just knocked it out of gear and spun it till it was empty. Luckely it only had a liter in it.
