Drag RX7 recomendations

New user question to the forum group

I would like some feed back/suggestions for my 85 GSL. My son who is 18 is interested in getting in to strip racing and my thoughts were to let him convert my RX7. the goal is to get a car that is relativly speeking inexpensive. Be able to run a consistant 14 in the quater mile. I have seen many 1st gens with a 12A turbocharged, ported and not ported. I have seen 1st gens with 2nd gen turbo 2 engens I have also seen 13B's with holly and webber carbs in many configurations.

What have you done, and What do you recommend?

You should buy him a fox-body Mustang with a 5.0

I could probably have an 11 sec. Mustang for for the amount of money I have in my FB that might run 13's but I'm not much for the 1/4 mi.

If you stick with the RX I say bridge port the 12A and get a Webber.

Check the local club, their forum is kcrx7club.com. They have a few good builders. Maybe not much on 1st gens though. I'm up in St Joe.

Yea, have to agree, either go out and buy a mustang or you could just do the unthinkable.........drop a V* in it.

I did a 13B swap into my 85GS. My first time to the track I was suprised when I ran a 14.5 in the 1/4. It was fairly inexpensive and I used lots of stock parts.

I bought a 87 n/a for $600 and pulled the motor, dropped the sixport 13B into the 85GS, bought a RacingBeat header and presilencer, Holley fuelpump, Dellorto Carb, and a rearend gear ratio out of a GSL-SE. THAT WAS IT. The car ran steadily 14.5ish all day long over a total of 8 passes.

The clutch, ignition, suspenion, and just about everything else was stock. No weight reduction. Oh yea and a set of Nitto Dragradials. That set-up was fun, inexpensive and handled a continous BEATING. I'm SURE if I stayed n/a instead of going turbo right away I could of extracted 13's eventually.

Turbo will be MORE expensive and time costly unless you've been down the path before and know what you are doing.

Big SP 12a, RB exhaust all the way back, and a Dellorto, or Weber carbs will get you near that. I'm running low 15's with a mild SP, Holley Intake kit (not tuned at all) and the SP exhaust.

you can easily make these cars fast down the track. their friggin lite already and it's easy to get them around 2000 lbs, granted you dont want accessories or comfort. you could turbo the 12a and easily hit 13's and it's not that expensive to do. you could do a tII swap and yet again hit 13's. build either one of those up and get alot of boost in there and you can really get some great numbers. then you have to start really worrying about drivetrain issues... just slap a ford 8.8 rear end in there and a tII trans with a custom driveshaft. do it, it'll be so much fun!
