Door Striker Question

Is the plate that the door striker screws into captive? In other words, if I completely remove both screws will it stay in place, or will it fall down into the hollow area of the door sill? I believe it's captive, but would rather be sure before removeing both screws.

Thanks,
Rich

She'll stay there Rich. No worries. I think that they are welded on the backside or something. I've taken mine off before though, and you're fine....

As you have it now, it seems that you'd get some movement if it wasn't captive.

It does move...that's how you adjust it. But I need to know if it's contained in it's own little box so it won't drop when both screws are removed.

I've attached the same picture cropped and not reduced...you can see that there is a plate in behind the door sill.

Thanks,
Rich

LOL...no, I just want to get it out of the paint guy's way. Although I probably will clean it up and plate it with Eastwood's plating system. That's what I've been using on most of the hardware.

I had zero luck with that system. It did a few parts and then quit working

The electroplating is pretty cool. I thought about using my brothers nickel plating kit he uses for refurbishing guns to nickel plate my calipers. I assume the nickel could hold up to the temp but what about the zinc coating?

Wow, that surprises me. I used it on ALL of the hardware on the MGB I restored, and I have yet to see any rust on any of them. I did follow up the plating with a coat of Diamond Clear for bare metal (http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?i...emType=PRODUCT) and I'm sure that helped a ton, but the plating system really made everything look good. All I've had to do is buy new anodes now and then, and replace the batteries every so often.

Have you had to replace the fluid?

No...I hadn't done any plating for about 5 years, but just dug everything out, including the electrolyte, put new batteries in, and started plating again. Seems to be working great.

The plate that was on the firewall says L6. The window sticker I have says Ocean Blue Metallic.

i thought so. i also have an L6 car. would you be willing to scan the window sticker or take a picture of it and email it to me? i really like my L6 car, which i bought hit hard in the front and am repairing. im a fan of the L6 and would like to gather some literature regarding the ocean blue metallic color and your window sticker would really help me out. i also wanted to know if you had any pics of the car that you'd like to share.

Sure...I'll try to get a good picture of the window sticker later. I switched all my computers to Linux and my scanner isn't supported by Linux, so I can't scan it. I've attached a few pictures of the car. It won't be L6 much longer...almost ready to take to the body shop to get a fresh coat of a dark blue...haven't decided the exact shade yet.

Well, somehow those pictures make it look a LOT batter than it is. The paint is in terrible shape. But at least there's no rust! I'm getting the windshield replaced tomorrow, and it looks like it it'll go into the body shop toward the end of next week.

Hey Billy -

I hadn't done any plating since I finished the MG about 5 years ago, but now that I've been doing it again I've thought of a couple of things that may help with your plating. You have to keep the anode clean. After 4 or 5 pieces I'll take it out of the electrolyte and clean off the black crust that builds up on the part that's submerged...I just use the edge of a screwdriver. Also, whatever you use to attach to the piece being plated (a wire or a clip) will get a crusty buildup of plating that needs to be cleaned off periodically. And of course you have to make sure you have good batteries.
