What makes the rotary "brap, brap, brap" sound? That is the coolest sound ever. Only hear that on raced out rotaries.

I think the original thread poster was actually reffering to the quiet hum that Mazda advertised in the 70s on TV.

If the engine go "boing boing" then the mazda go "hummm."

After all, they were marketed as the Silent Sportscars. I would like to hear a bone stock quiet one, just once.

Big port overlap. Residual exhaust gases going into the next intake charge. You can get a big streetport to brap like a bridge if you want....its all in tuning, timing, and port size.

I live in new zealand an everyone apart from people who have a clue think a rotaty only makes the brap brap brap. I think its because the bridge ports are so popular over hear and in aussie.
From what i see on this forum most of you guys in the US don't even consider a bridge port or P port unless doing an all out race car. I understand how its 'not good for the street an way too loud', but thats what makes it so cool!!
I don't think theres many sounds in the world that come close to a pulsin rotary.

you mean the same noise the rx-8 makes on startup and while idleing?
most 7's make that noise, some are less noticeable some are more noticeable, it just really depends on the engine itself; what kind of mods have been made, how the engine was treated.... my old motor never made the sound on my -SE but when my friend rebuilt it for me it makes it but barely noticeable since it has RB header-straight pipe-RB muffler so its kinda loud

My car makes the sound you are looking for everytime I shift around 4,000rpm. That is the only reason why I love shifting that high because of the sound. =P by the way my car is stock 84 Sport 12A. My understanding this sound come from the Carb and not the exhaust.

my tranny whines i think. Or maybe it the rotary. I have an electric fan and stock manifold. I hear it very clearly ever since i have owned it , it has made the WHIRRRR sound. I had my friend who owns a 13b GSL SE ride with me and he asked what that sound was. I said its the rotary doesn't yours do it too? He said no. We rode in it and it was quiet. Of course all you could hear is the stock fan.

I know rotaries usually make that simply awesome "Whiirrrrr!!!" noise when it winds up, and I even had a guy in a 2nd Gen vert take off from a stop light beside me and he wound his up, making the same noise. The problem is, mine doesn't make that noise. I did install a fresh air intake in place of my stock setup, and I did get a nice noticeable noise from that, however still no wonderful rotary sound.

So, does your engine make that noise and if so, how is yours setup to do that?
It's the stock factory exhaust that makes them hmmmmm. The father you get from stock, the less it sounds like hmmmmm and more like an enormous chainsaw.

peejay's exactly right, I have a hybrid rb exhaust and it sounds like a combo of a dirt bike and a chainsaw, my friend on the other hand has all factory exhaust and it makes the famous 'hmmmm' sound.

My 7 idles at about 2300rpm when it's warm and emits a very loud bark. It's good fun to roll up on a cyclists making almost no noise and then gas it right next to them. I've almost made at least 5 riders almost fall off their bikes!!
