Does a holley red pump need an fpr

I have a stock nikki being fed by a holley red pump. Couple of days ago someone gave me a tip and said if I installed an fpr and adjusted it to about 2psi I would be able to get some performance gains. I went to the holley site and they said that you dont need a fpr with the red pump but the advise to install one came from a reputable source so now I'm confused.

If an fpr is a good idea, would this be a good buy?

Of course its a good idea to have a FPR. This way, you can test & tune your carb using different fuel pressure.

The Holley Red pump has a built in relieve valve limiting maximum pressure. The built in relief valve is set higher than what the Nikki likes, so an external adjustable regulator is a good idea.

You definitely need a fuel pressure gauge in your system to monitor the pressure it is actually delivering to the carb.

When buying your pressure gauge buy a gauge that the full reading of the gauge is 5 pis. IIRC the Holly red pump has a max pressure of 4 psi. Gauges are made as is everything else with gauge accuracys that are all over the place. Many gauges also have different accuracy values for different distances across the face of the gauge. I don't remember the accuracy values but lets use the following & you will get the idea. The first 1/3 of the gauge face reading will be +/- 20%, the second 1/3 of the face reading will be +/- 10% with the third 1/3 of the gauge face reading will be +/- 20%. The % values are +/- 20 % of the gauge face number you read on the gauge while the motor is running. You can see/calcuate that if your pressure is set so that you read the suggested 2 psi (which is a good number to set your prssure at) within the middle 1/3 of the gauge face your pressure accuracy will be better than if your reading 2 psi at either outer 1/3 of the gauge face.

The 5 psi gauge I have has an acuracy value of +/- 1 1/2 % across the full face of the gauge. If you were to Google McMaster-Carr & search & read about gauges you should find a same/similar gauge. Approx $60.00 when I bought 5 years ago.

Buying a after market fule pump is good, buying an after market ruglator is good & you also need to buy a GOOD after market pressure regulator because the regulator is what sets/controls your pressure to the carb.

Check with Respeed for a quality gauge at a decent price. Testing has found that most other gauges are very inaccurate when you try to use them at the low pressures we require.

You can also check this link for more info on installation and where to buy the regulator:

The FPR pictured appears to be a high pressure type suitable for fuel injection pressure range. This would be useless on your system. I would stay with the setup you have and add a good pressure gauge.

Although I've still yet to get one since I am still registering my "new" '85....the Mallory sold at RotaryShack.com is a decent price and boost reference-able if ever going turbo. 4-45 psi....otherwise, the holley FPR is the way to go....cheap too.
