My experience happened a llooonngg time ago when I first got into RX-7s...I can't honestly say whether it was a back or after-fire, but I don't remember the air cleaner being damaged. I just remember the kid gunning the engine for some late night flames...pow, pow ,pow and then, suddenly, this giant plume of white smoke started coming out of the exhaust! It would still run but only at high idle. I kept it running long enough for the thermal reactor to go cherry red before I shut it down knowing it would never start again. Thus started the adventures of swapping in used motors from JAP Imports for 1 year fixes until I had the money for an Ari Yallon engine...

I've got an 83 Rx-7 GS, pretty much stock accept for straight pipe off the stock headers.. (busted out the cats) the thing is loud as a bitch, and right now it's having start problems, and my carb is messed up... just spent 400$ on a stereo, and now the damn car wants more money... anyways, when I race my car, I'll usually take it up to about 7.5k or 7.8k or until my shift lite is blinding me so bad I can't see.. when I change gears real quick, it's the loudest damn backfire I've ever heard.. louder than a damn 12 gauge.. my friends celica was behind me, and he's like dude... you flame licked my car... I didn't even know I was shooting flames...
so is this bad, or normal?

to quote someone on this forum...
"flames... you either got 'em or you don't"

later

i have a 79 Rx7 GS and it has backfired since the day it was purchased way back in 79. i have dropped another 12A in it and because it has a thermal reacter on it, the Rx will backfire. I think its kinda cool plus u get to say it has a thermal reacter lol kinda blows peoples minds.

My thermal reactor '80 used to pop all the time. Between shifts, on decel, just for the hell of it, whenever basically. But when I junked the emissions crap and threw an ACV plate on, it stoppped. Now I only get the flames on full throttle runs, after I take my foot out of it. It's great when it lights up the dark road behind you.

I have hear these poping and backfiring could be due to bad timing. I have never touched my timing, but im afraid it could be bad, so i picked up my haynes manual and its talking about lights and stuff...isn't there an easy way to set it back to stock?

Thanks for the peace of mind everyone!
When mine sounded like shot gun, I had a hole in the back of my muffler canister.

Bumping old threads is fine, if there is a question involved relating to it. My question is, what happened to your engine after it backfired and wouldn't start again.

I feel the same, in fact I find myself editing a lot of my posts because of this.

I find most of your posts to be uninformed, uneducated and just plain guessing at things. This is why I've been telling you to post less and read/learn more. Apparently that hasn't soaked in yet.

You surely have a quick tongue for a n00b. Talk less and learn more is what Trochoid is trying to get thru your thick skull, and I tend to agree. I would add be a little bit more respectful and thankful to contributing forum members.

Oh, and whatever sassy reply to this post comes to your mind, just spare me.

Kids these days...
