You need to get a dwell meter to check the points. They may just need adjustment. However, do your self a favor and find an electronic dizzy, ignitors and coils. Not only will you not have to check the points, you will probably notice better gas mileage and more power to boot.

Anyways, for the procedure to check the dwell, go to www.iluvmyrx7.com and download the '79 service manual.

Oops, I just went to the site and remembered that the only manual for the '79 is the factory wiring manual. Sorry about that.

from my experience and what i have heard the points usually last about 10k miles. last time i kept mine till the car hardly ran at all, it would all the sudden lose power and die when i was cruising, that sucked.

The points wear out pretty quickly, due to the rotary engine's firing so often. I've bought 3 electronic distributors from junkyards in the past for $40-$50 complete with coils. Money well spent. The only downside is that the rotor and cap is more expensive (about $25) than the old points-style units. Anybody got a line on any decent rotor and cap kits for less $$, I'd sure like to hear about it. -WG

Hey man, Ive got a distributor that I would sell you pretty cheap, complete with ignitiors...Like $25 plus shipping (however much that would be to Austrailia). Anyway, let me know if you want it, or whatever .

PS - If you want it, let me know what else you need to convert and I can probably get it all to you for a little more money .
