distributor/timing question

been searching the archives for awhile now..............cantseem to find the answer..........i rotated my engine by hand until the leading mark on the pully was aligned with the pin...... then pulled my distributor so i could check to see if i had any play in the bottom gear.........when i put it back in i aligned the little dot with the raised mark on the shaft of the distributor like the book says to do, then went and insertrd it back in, unsure of exactlyhow it was supose to go....meaning....if you were to picture it as a clock where exactly would be 12 oclock in regards to the exterior of the dizzy? there isnt anything to use as a reference for alignment when dropping it back in.........i played with this a few times to get a better understanding and idea.....then after a few times of pulling the distributor. cranking it by hand first to align pully etc..... i noticed the rotor sometimes being off 180%......so with distributor cap off id rotate motor by hand watching the rotor turn, i noticed that for every full rotation i did with the motor the rotor only went 18o degrees, does the problem lie in my head? or is this how its suppose to work, .....for every rotation of the rotor the motor turns over twice? any info will help.........

Rotation is correct. To simplify clocking the dizzy, the ignitors, the 2 black boxes on the outside, should point towards the alt and the front of the bay. The snap clip for the cap nearest the ignitors should be in approximately the 11:00 position.

Correct. The thing to watch is the pulley with the timing marks. Pre-86 pulleys are not indexed, as such, they can be mounted in 4 positions/clockings, one of which is correct. If you have not had your pulley off, don't concern yourself about changing it. If you look at the rotor and the pickups inside the dizzy cap, you will see why it works the way it does.

When re-inserting the dizzy, the shaft will tend to turn, keep the dizzy aligned with the rotor to avoid that. In my previous post, when I reffered to 11:00, that's with the assumption that 12:00 is pointing directly across to the passenger side, 9:00 would be the front of the car.

ok thx.........i believe the water pump was replaced right before i got the care not sure if pully needed to be removed to do that....havent ever researched it....but as far as dropping dizzy back in yes 12 oclock straight across to passenger side........my cars an 85 so the pully isnt indexed but i have a timming light and wondering if i can just crank it over with fuel pump off and check timming? also in need of another thing answered......i have major glowing exhaust.... i had i muffler put on about 2 months ago and exhaust only glowed when i first got car.....turned out to be carb i think......i played with everything i could think of that time and eventually got it fixed......never truely knowing what was cause.......but now glowing is back shortly after muffler change ..........could muffler be to small creating to much back pressure? cars been sitting now for a month been trying to fix it almost daily.............cleaned carb and checked all jets and cleaned again to many times to count now ...just got floats right finally not flooding anymore, also in process of changing to direct fire ignition. please any info would help........especially about muffler thx

Are you trying to say the car was unmolested, stock yet running, then you pulled the rat's nest, pulled the dizzy and now it won't run?

Glowing exhaust could be either a timing issue, or a fuel mixture issue.

Easy way to make sure your dizzy is in right- Line up the leading timing mark on the pulley, take off the dizzy cap and the arrow on the rotor should be pointing at the drivers seat.

Thats funny. I do the same thing but I set it with the arrow pointing towards the radiator. Always fires right up.
