distributor question
just bought a 82 with a 13b. it need some tuning and what not, so the first thing i did was reinstall the distributor. i alligned the engine with the leading yellow marker. alligned the distributor with the dimple and the mark on the shaft. i installed the distributor and the next step in the manual is:
"turn the distributor until the leading points just start to open (or signal rotor and pick up coil allign)"
what does this refer to.
thanks

Your using the haynes manual arent you? There are NO points in an 82 dizzy. Look in chapter on later models near the end of the book.
You did the procedure correctly, forget about the last sentence. When you align the dimple, look at the top end of the dizzy. See how one of the 4 reluctor teeth lines up perfectly with the forward mag pickup? After you drop it inmake sure that it still lines up. Youll notice that because of the helical teeth on the dizzy that it will rotate a little when you install it. You have to compensate for that by not lining it up straight in the middle of the adjustment slot. Hard to describe in words.

what i did was lined up the dimples then made some allignment marks on the housing and the distr rotor. i just lined those back up.
i got it to run and idle for about fifteen minutes, then it died and now i can't get it started. will work on it some more.
did the first gens come with a holley four barrel? it may need a atf bath for couple days.

The Haynes manual is kinda annoying that way...
Here's the downloadable 85 FSM:

As a general guideline, personally, if I bought a car with an aftermarket carb and it wasn't running well (probably even if it was running well), I would clean and rebuild the carb, check what the jetting is and that any adjustments are properly set. I think it's important to start with a clean slate, and know myself that the carb is setup properly and everything is clean and working right. I don't know much about Holley carbs, but you never know what some people consider "running right" and what they have put in there. I know that with Dellorto's, you see them with all kinds of strange things that probably shouldn't be there.
