Distributor direction?

So I'm putting my disrib in, and I got the engine at TDC. Which way does the distrib go in? Does the flat end of the distrib shaft go toward the L1 contact? or the other way around, there are only 2 possibilities.

align the dot on the gear with the pointer that's cast into the dist body.

Also, expect it will rotate a few degrees as the helical gears engage. Key is to start with the dot aligned with the pointer, and with the retention stud near the center of the slot on the hold-down plate.
