So I backed out of a parking spot and before I left the lot the tach died. Odd ok I turn the corner and the car dies. Almost like I stalled it. (I din't. before you ask!) Then the only way to get to run for a few sec was to pour a bit of gas in the carb. Being the noob that I'am... I'am I just missing somthing here or is it bigger?


Sorry again I know there I a ton or "starting issue" theads on here and the last thing I wanted to do was add another one. I just could't find one that sounded like this.

Sounds like bad/fouled plugs? or fuel pump/filter? The batt is good it will run for about 15-20 sec when fuel is poured in carbs and after uses that bit up it dies again.

^^^^ sounds like you're not getting fuel to the carb. I think one of the coils power the fuel pump (+) as well as sending a signal to the tach (-). Hopefully someone else can verify this. check the wiring diagram if you have one (fsm)

Think we may be on to somthing. The tach died then a coil would make sense the closest wiring di I could find was for a 86. I have a 84. Silly question where are the coils and can I test/fix/replace them myself?

look up Trochoid and look at his signature. He has all the fsm links there for the 1 st gen and others. I would check and see if the coils are good and make sure the wires are all connected to them. Check the fuse for the pump and maybe the fusible links as well. Good luck.

The ignitors control the tach (more specifically the trailing), not the coils. If an ignitor was dead, the coil wouldnt fire. If that coil wasnt firing, obviously the engine would be trying to run on only half of itself (only leading ignition). Mine did this once when I had a bad trailing ignitor, but my car would run and idle fine on just leading, just down on power a little. Im surprised that yours isnt running on just the leading also, you might want to look into it deeper after you get the ignitor problem sorted out because most of the cars Ive run into will run on just the leading ignition...

Check the ignitors. A quick way to check for spark is to just take a regular timing light and hook it up to each of the wires one at a time, and while the car is running pull the trigger on the timing light. If it blinks, you have spark. If it doesnt, you dont.

On 84's the trailing ignitor also supplies power to the fuel pump. Replace the ignitor.

^^^^ Thanks all for the info. I knew it was some part of the ignition. Starting to relearn about the rotaries again myself. I guess it is still in my blood.

Man this comes up soooo many times. We really really need to get something in the FAQ about this.

Your tach doesn't work? your car won't start? no fuel into the carb? your car is an 84-85 model?

Hey, without newbie questions like this, what would we have to talk about? Do you guys know that if you carry a 4' jumper wire with you and your rear ignitor goes out, you can jump the fuel pump in about five minutes by connecting to the hot side of the rear hatch light to the fuel pump lead under the driver's side storage compartment? If not this was a worthwhile post!

What I'd really do if I wanted to be prepared ahead of time is having a spare IGNITOR. I always carried more than one in my tool bag, along with a myriad of other things I could need while on the road.
