The 79-82 starters are interchangable, as well as the 83-85. I don't think you can use one from an 80 in an 85.

I think the difference is how the cable connects.

Try it and let us know. I've been putting off replacing my dying '85 starter with the good one from the '80. If it doesn't work that means either rebuilding the starter myself or swapping in the '80 transmission. (Probably the latter, it doesn't make ugly noises and the synchros aren't screwed up )

Don't tighten the nut on the starter cable in such a way as to let the eyelet contact on the cable spin and touch the starter housing.

Although it is kind of cool watching all the wiring in the engine compartment burst into flames simultaneously...

I think every car should come with a fire extinguisher within arm's reach of the driver as part of standard safety equipment. I've come across a few accidents where one or more cars caught fire (especially Fords, for some strange reason - they have a fuel cut-off inertia switch, but man do they blaze!) and it would have been handy.

Our Pinto went up in flames by itself, after sitting by itself for over 5 months... untouched. Then one day it decided to creat a giant electrical fire on it's own...

The Pinto problem was that the fuel tank would snag on the differential and tear open. FWOOSH. A $4 metal shield was all that was needed to fix it, but it was cheaper to just settle lawsuits.

Mazda has the gas tank in the exact same place, but they have metal shields around the tank.
