The '98-01 Sportage front pumpkin assembly is a "drop in" replacement for the Series 3. Same axle splines, same driveshaft flange bolt pattern. Only difference is that all of the pumpkin-to-housing bolts are the same length, so one of your RX-7 bolts will be way too long. This is an incredibly minor inconveniece in the great scheme of things.
Also, it's an open diff, so if you want to use a limited slip, you need to swap one in. If you're going to go that route anyway, you can easily use it in a '79-83 rear, just get a small-axle diff. You will still need a '83-85 driveshaft. I don't recommend changing the pinion flange since there is a high probability of wrecking the pinion bearings, unless you know what you're doing (in which case you're ignoring this anyway).

Hey PeeJay, I don't know if you saw my thread, But touched on something here so I thought I would ask. What your saying is for example, I can take an 82 diff and swap it into an 83 housing because they share the small axles?https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/swapping-gears-485651/
