swapping gears

Hey, I was wondering if it was possible to swap gears from an 82", lsd and all into a 83" open diff carrier.

Possible but not very smart, just buy a complete LSD disc brake rear from a GSL and install the whole shebang.

Well here's the deal. I already have a gsl rearend but the main gear and one of the spider gears is toast. At the time this happened the only thing I could find to replace it was an 82 gsl lsd but the carrier race doesn't mate up to the axle housing. In other words the only thing holding it up is the carrier bolts. Earlier today I found a 83 gs but as we all know only the gsl's came factory with the lsd hence the reason why I want to do the swap. It has the right carrier just no lsd.

Although I still think it'd be easier to find a good GSL rear the rear end use the same ring and pinion, the 84/85 have a stronger axle and larger bearings. 82 to 83 shouldn't be different at all so far as I know.

Except drive shaft flange is different between 82 and 83.

Not a big deal if you want to do a rebuild, anyway's they are 20 plus years old after all. I took an LSD carrier changed the flange to 83-85 and replaced the R&P to 4.1:1, side gears, bearings and LSD plates for my '83 ..basically just used the cast structures.

I may have this 4.1 LSD carrier for sale next summer, as rules are making me go back to the 3.909

I keep hearing this (flange) is different from 82 to 83. What makes it different? I put an 82 pumkin in my 83 and it bolted right up drive shaft and all.
