Didnt pas inspection

I know i know, problem after problem. HOWEVER, it passed the CO and CO2 ****, they say its "too rich" and you can smell the gas. ********. Ok, how can I properly get the mixture right? I know where the screw is on the carb, but how do i know when i got it to the right spot?Ok, more info.

HC (ppm) mine, 1128 max, 220
CO(%) mine, .06% max 1.20%
CO2(%) 17.1% --- passes, no max

Ok, so i failed the HC. What does that mean? As far as i can tell all the emmision stuff is still on there, got the cats and everything. What should i try first?

They are correct it is too rich. Have you checked your ACV? This is the most common reason to fail the emmisions test, and the first place I would look before trying anything else. If you ACV is functioning properly(i.e. all of the air from the air pump is going to the cat), then you need to get a hold of an exhaust gas anylyzer, or a wide band O2 sensor, and see how rich you are running. Then see if you can lean it out.

But first and foremost, check that ACV. Shoot me an e-mail if your ACV doesn't look like it's working, moremazda@yahoo.com.

Err...i dont mean to sound stupid but whats the ACV? Air thingy for the catalytic converter? You mentioned the CAT, so is the ACV the PUMP or the lines or what?

Dude, if you want to pass, raise the idle to 1200rpm, and turn in the idle mix screw a little. This will lean it out and with a raised idle, the overlap will effect emissions less at a higher rpm then and will clean up some. This isn't a fix, its a thing you do to pass emissions. ha ha For those who think maybe its the ACV, just remember orginal cats will be less effective today then when they were made.

acv - air check (or control, not really sure) valve..
it decides when to move the air from the airpump to the exhaust, and when to recycle it back into the intake.

HC=hydrocarbons

The mixture screw is clockwise is leaner and counter clockwise is richer. Screw it all the way in and back it out about 2 1/2 turns...Not sure what that will get you w/o a gas analyzer but thats how I have set a lot of carbs after rebuilds...

you also might want to try a major tune up; plugs, plug wires, dist rotor, air filter, oil all that good crap. My trans am was polluting like crazy and I changed all the stuff I just mentioned. It helped alot. Peace
