Yes, this could be a great breakthrough. A nice write-up with good pics and gear sourcing would be the ticket.
You would be loved by all. Atleast those that aren't going rack and pinion

The tutorial would even be useful to people just wanting to rebuild their steering boxes in stock form... since there are no good pictures of the inside of the box as it is now, and no info on how it comes apart or goes back together!

This is amazing stuff! EVERYONE is looking for a way to fix the FB steering.
I can't afford a new setup like ReSpeed is selling (I want one badly, but school comes first) but if I can do it on my own, I am definatly down with that.
What year mustangs should we be looking at for the worm gear, and where can we find this catalog?

Here's a related question. My understanding is that the ratio in a power steering box is tighter because the power assist makes up for what would be unacceptably tight steering in a stock car, at least with reference to the average driver.
So if you dismantle the power steering, are you in effect installing this tigher gear set?
I removed the power steering pump on my 84 GSL, it's harder harder to steer but tighter than my 85 GSL without power steering.
Did I do the upgrade without knowing it?
Or, in other words, if you substitute a power steering box (without the pump and plumbing) for a nonpower box, will the steering be tighter? If so, this might be easier than running down those gears and rebuilding the box.

...Installing a power steering box is just going to give you a quicker steering ratio, it will not affect any of the other steering slop that can cause wondersteer. On top of that, if the power steering box has any slop you will still have wondersteer.
So no, not really, but if you can find a low mileage pwr steering box, you could certainly use it as an improvement...
...speaking of power steering boxes, apparently the boxes are similar on the B-series pickups... possibly another source of replacement boxes? (anyone looked into this?)
...My B2200 has a PS box and my rx-7 has no PS, so I can't readily compare, but I can certainly get some measurements from the truck if anyone knows the measurements for the Rx-7 box.

Yes, I guess that is what I was trying to say. And without the power steering assist, it will be kind of hard to turn, relative to a car fitted with a nonpower steering box. So isn't this the same as changing the worm gear and the cross shaft sector gears to get the car to "handle faster and turn hard"?
From the link posted at the top:
"By replacing the Worm Gear and the Cross Shaft Sector Gear with new gears that have more but the same amount of teeth the steering will be much smoother and "jerky"
By replacing the Worm Gear and the Cross Shaft Sector Gear with a 3 tooth Cross Shaft Sector Gear and a 4 Spiral Worm Gear the car will handel faster and turn hard."
Of course, if you already have power steering and you "replace the Worm Gear and the Cross Shaft Sector Gear with a 3 tooth Cross Shaft Sector Gear and a 4 Spiral Worm Gear", you might get an even quicker steering ratio, which might be what this is all about.
