X7 Productions Steering Trick.

Ok guys i have had a lot of local people ask why my steering on my FB is so much tighter then there FB.

Well here it is the steering trick.

This is a picture of a normal steering "Gearbox"

When you want a tighter steering car that responds better you need to change the Cross Shaft Sector Gear and the Worm Gear. Depending on the size and amount of teeth the gear has will determin the rotation and speed in wich the rotation happens.

By replacing the Worm Gear and the Cross Shaft Sector Gear with new gears that have more but the same amount of teeth the steering will be much smoother and "jerky"

By replacing the Worm Gear and the Cross Shaft Sector Gear with a 3 tooth Cross Shaft Sector Gear and a 4 Spiral Worm Gear the car will handel faster and turn hard.

By testing ratio's you can make the car handel to whatever spec you want you can turn your steering wheel 6 inches and your car will turn left or right at full force.

I hope this has helped any of you that needed better steering out of your already amazing steering 7.

I don't understand any of this yet Nick, but I will testify that your car has the best steering of any fb that I've driven. My car is pretty tight, but in comparison your's makes it feel like a Chevy station wagon...

And since you're replacing gears, this is basically akin to rebuilding your steering box at the same time!

If I sent you a steering box, could you mod it for me? (I'd pay for it of course!)

If you can find an old mustang the Worm Gear from that is good and the Shaft Sector Gear can be custom orderd from a simple parts catalog like MDG.

As for doing them i could do it but its so simple to do yourself it would not be worth the shipping.

And yes when you tear it open you might as well put new seals in.

Heck, I'd be glad to do it and snap a few photos. Do we know what the part numbers are?

Has anyone done this?

If it's so easy, I'd really love to give it a go.... but the directions are kinda vague.

Yeah, and I never did get any more detail from him. He joined the Army and disappeared. Last I heard, he was selling off his RX7s.

That's awesome Nick! If this is something that works out, it will be a great benefit to all of us. I can say that, of all of the 1st gens I have driven, yours by far had the best steering feel of any of them.

He still gets on here once in a while when he is not deployed. Try sending him a PM and ask for an update to this thread.

If I think of it, I'll mention it to him at the race this weekend.
