Dellorto DHLA 48 question

I have a GSL with a 13b out of an S4 with Dellorto DHLA 48 with RB intake manifold. I was wondering what air filter to use being that K&N have several.

Filter Outside Element Foot Assembly
Application Style* Dimension Height Part # Note Part #
Dellorto DHLA 40,45,48 SDO 4-1/2 x 7 1-3/4 E-3321 12 56-1310
SDO 4-1/2 x 7 3-1/4 E-3341 56-1320
SDO 5-1/2 x 9 1-3/4 E-3441 12 56-1330
SDO 5-1/2 x 9 3-1/4 E-3461 -------

* Filter Styles: DDO = down draft oval DDR = down draft round SDO = side draft oval SDR = side draft round REC = rectangle

FOOTNOTE 12) will not work with velocity stacks.

I have two filters
a 4 1/2 x 6 (Which is too small to hold the throttle bracket) and the 4 1/2 x 7 3/4 which seems just right.

I run the K&N Oval but honestly I'd rather have stacks with socks...the big massive filter is a PITA to get on/off and looks like it spends more timing soaking up latent heat off the engine then actually doing anything.

Please disregard that abomination of a wiring setup, currently tearing it all out

yeah that's way bigger than I thought it would be. Do the socks actually protect? where could I buy some.

I still run the RB filter. Heres what it looks like:

Its large for a reason. The filter needs to have about 2" if open space above the
velocity stacks (trumpets as they were called) or the air will not flow well into
the carb. So get a filter that give you this 2" of clearance and still can be fit
between the carb and the oil fill tube.

I don't recommend the socks as they have been shown to impede the air flow
due to the wire mesh used to reinforce the foam over the openings. It disrupts
the flow and prevents the velocity stacks from doing their job.

Would you care to share some documentation of that? I'd like to see the type of socks that they used to come to that conclusion. I can see how one might reach that conclusion but if you have any physical material that would be awesome.

This is something I've looked into as Pipercross have a great reputation for their filters.

My cars never ran right with socks nor the filter cap with foams. So I switched back to geico

I went to a local VW shop and picked up a filter that had a hole on the side of the rear plate for the throttle cable to attach, and it was pretty reasonable.

Get a empi catalog they have several. A weber idf filter will work with some mods and make sure you drill the float vent hole in the filter body

See Wackys post above. I've read numerous similiar responses before.

I'm sure they're filters are fine its just that the carbs velocity stacks can't work unless
they have head room for the air to make the bend cleanly.
