Get a widebody kit, otherwise you out of luck.

You won't really get that because -SE's have a really high offset, about the same as a front-drive car. (Which is why you outta luck unless you have a widebody)

13x8/13x9's and by association 15x8/15x9's look pretty bad-*** on an autox car, and no matter what you have GSL-SE or 12A you will have to necessarily have a lot of dish, because the OEM wheels have "feeler gauge" clearance to the strut/spring so any additional width has to go outboard. Plus, steel racing wheels are badass no matter what.

But fender clearance... on heavy suspension compression the 13x7's on my '80 were outboard just enough to let the tire sidewalls (205/60) graze the inside of the fender lips and pull them down. Had I been running 13x8's or 13x9's with 215/50 or 235/45 tires, the fenders woulda been *smashed*. Had I had the car at a lower ride height, it would have happened at a less severe bump.

You are going to have to go on a Quest to the Land of Fender Flares if you want to run 15x9 or 16x9.

The 7 below has gsl-se suspension. That's the widest lip you can have on a SE. Anythinh wider and it will stick out.

Tire places won't know anything unless they own a gsl-se themself.

some have gone 16x8 and 17x8 but I've not seen them in person.

Oh there's plenty of room in the back... it's the front that is cramped, because Mazda had to get the struts as FAR OUTBOARD AS POSSIBLE in order to make room for the wide rotary engine.

Well, scratch that. The right rear tire runs awfully close to the muffler. This is dependent on what exhaust system you are using, of course.
