Unhappy debating selling my highly modded SA for college.....

im having trouble getting decisions made for college, money for college, etc. i work a fulltime job, a good job, Caterpillar. i make $14 an hour, plus time and a half and double time. i have every kind of insurance available and i dont pay anything. i even have a $75k life insurance policy for free. i also dont have to pay rent, or a car payment. i have a bad habit though....rx7s. all my money has been going into my car. ive been out of highschool for 1 year and a few months and i havent been to college yet.

i had decided to start this fall, then expenses surfaced(braces, paying off motorcycle, saving for first years rent of apartment). either way, i cant have the money for all of this and go to school this fall. i plan on selling the bike to fund the braces but im still shy on everything else. ive thought about commuting(45 minutes). id have to quit my $$ job and get a part time joband live in my horrible town when id rather just move to the town my college is in when i go. i could also work another year, save much lots of $$, not sale the bike, not sale the 7 and have plenty of money for college. bad thing about that route is im tired of living here, living with my parents, not doing anything with my life. uugghh

my idea for my future changes so much, i have no idea what im going to do. im even debating enlisting, but i dont know if thatll happen or not. i dont want to sale the 7 then it be wasted cause i didnt accomplish anything.

i posted here in the first gen section as you are the guys and gals im around the most and i think contains some of the wisest forum members. i know this probably should have been posted in the lounge, but the lounge also contains a lot of dousches and i dont feel like hearing anyones crap.

heres a link to my cars for sale thread to get an idea.

feedback is greatly appreciated. thanks

If it were me, I'd wait the extra year. There's no benefit in rushing to college and that extra year means you get to keep the toys. Saving for college isn't 'doing nothing with your life.' You've got a plan, which is more than most can say. So, work some more, keep the 7 and make sure that your chosen course at college is the right thing for you.

Thats my .02

Take out low interest student loans, keep the toys, get a part time job to pay for some of it.

Let's face it, having only been out of school for one year so far and assuming you are like most kids going into college - you really have no idea what you are going to be going to college for. In not knowing you are more than likely just throwing that cash down the drain. For example, going to college and taking a ton of classes for Major 1, only to realize you want to do Major 2. Switching your classes to Major 2 only to decide that Major 3 is what major you want to be doing. By the time you finally make up your mind you are out a lot more money that you would otherwise have.

And yes I support going to college 100%, but not when you are just throwing your money down the drain.

I agree with these guys. I sold my 2nd gen when I started college and have hated myself ever since (almost 3 years ago). Don't EVER sell the 7!!! You will regret it more than losing your virginity to that dirty nasty flat chested ***** in highschool.... or wait, nevermind. Anyways, you get the idea.
Save as much as you can, get **** taken care of before you start college and you will be alright.

Get a student loan if you have to. It's an investment into your future. Use it only for college though, don't buy car parts with your college loan! If you want too long, you'll enjoy the money you're making and will continue to put off college. Since you've made the decision to go, you should. You'll make a LOT more money once you have the degree.

Evening classes at a local community college will allow you to knock out the general requirement classes, save money and allow you to keep your current Cat job. I'll bet Caterpillar will PAY for your evening classes as it's a tax benefit for them. Talk to your human resource manager ASAP. It may even help you grab a higher paying position with your current employer.

If Caterpillar's HR helps you out, you can keep the RX7, the same job (maybe more $), and meet cute babes at the community college. You win. Good luck.

I am starting DeVry in July and I just got studen loan that I don't need to pay anything until 6 month after I graduate with my bachelor degree. I am broke as hell and I just got my FB about less than 3 months ago. I would get student loan and plan a future because once you are out working on a high paying job you might never need to see your toy.

Also get a job like I am doing and use your studen loan for your college and save up. All you need is about 1 to 2 years of full time or 4 year of part time and you should be working by then on a good job hopefully. Good luck with that!

I agree with everyone else here, and I would hate to see you get rid of your 7 before you ever had a chance to enjoy it :X

It really comes down to what you want to do after college..

I am not 100% sure but I thought if you live in Georgia you can go to college for free is this true then hell yes quit your job and go to school full-time. The community college (CC) night class while still working at Caterpillar is an OK idea if (1) you want to work in business ie MBA, (2) you are HIGHLY dedicated and (3) you are OK with giving up the college experience. My advice would be to move out and live on your own no matter what the costs are. The trouble with staying in your hometown and going to CC is that in the three years it will take you to finish you AA you will have met some girl and she will not want to move away and support you while you are a starving student, or worse you will have knocked her up.

I am assuming it is too late to enroll in fall term so I would just work another year save some money and put some time into thinking about what you want to do and looking for funding. Your best option is to meet with the financial advisor for whatever universities you want to attend and then meet with the undergraduate advisor for the department you are interested. These people know the system and with their help you stand a FAR better chance of (a) getting funding and (b) getting accepted.

As far as the car and bike go. Well, the RX7 is only worth what 4k. If you sell it then you will have buy some econobox for about 4k which you hate to drive and don’t know how to work on. I would just keep the 7 and stop buying go fast parts for awhile. Keeping the bike may also be a good idea especially if you have to drive to school and buy a parking permit. Some colleges charge around 1K per year for a car parking permit but only $150 for a motorcycle and you often get to park closer, something to consider.

Education is important. Selling the 7 will give you a little education, as you will never get out of it, what you invested into it. Then, you will soon start to regret the whole ordeal.
First step, is to decide exactly what you want to do in life, and taylor your education to reach that goal. If you don't know what it is you want out of an education, you cannot optimize it towards reaching the desired outcome.
Once you have decided on the goal, then you will need to make a plan of how to achieve it, in the best manner for you. What works for Joe, doesn't always work for Bill, Tom, or Mike. Once the plan is made, stick to it as best you can. Sometimes adjustments need to be made, to accomodate outside factors that were known about in the beggining.

thanks everyone for all your repsonses. i greatly appreciate everyones advise.

georgia has HOPE. using this i think i could go to college almost 100% free, other than books and living expenses. the aprtment is called campus pointe. its not associated with the college but its a college based set up. its only $385 a month for everything. id want to pay my first years rent in full(around $4200 after discount). CAT will pay for my schooling on a refund system, after i graduate they refund most, if not all, of it.

after talking to a certain forum member who is going to help me out a whole lot, assist in getting job in area in motorsports and help me get into the motorsports class(1000 apply only 24 are accepted) i think ive decided what im going to do. i think my best option is to wait another year. ill start next fall. in that time ill continue to work at CAT and saving lots of money. by that time ill be making a good bit more than i am now. i can have everything paid for and have nothing to worry about. i havent decided if i want to keep the bike or not, the only problem is insurance isnt the cheapest thing in the world. its great for economical reasons though. i dont think ill sale the 7 at this time. if i sale the 7 i dont have to worry about buying another car, i have a 94 accord for a DD.

since im waiting a year i want to try to get as many core classes completed as possible. ill try to do as many as i can over the internet and then see about going down there maybe 2 days a week. just to get some stuff taken care of before i move down there.

thanks everyone for the repsonses. keep them coming. im listening to what everone has to say. thanks guys
