No wonder I can't adjust my idle. Damn thing is leaking somewhere. See the red stuff. That's MMO and gas. Where the hell could that be coming from? I looked around the carb, but it's not obvious where it's leaking from. I also sprayed carb spray and no change. You guys think I should tighten the screws and such?

I'm begining to hate carbs.

Today I cleaned up the areas and tighten the carb a little bit at the base. I had the fuel pressure at around 2 psi. I bumped it up to 3.5 psi. I took it out for a ride and my idle is way high almost 2k. I brought it back into the garage and this is what I found:



Yes it is saturated with fuel. Looks to be comming from that bigger round port, but I can't tell. This carb was rebuilt by Sterling about a year or so ago. Can someone help me figure this out. This could of been really bad. As you can see in one of the pics, fuel was dripping onto the header.

Dry it up and see if its really comming from there. I'll get ahold of Sterling for you.

Oh and you are premixing oil in the fuel right? I see you have the OMP blocked off.

Thanks carl! Yes i'm pre mixing with MMO. You can see traces of it. I dried it off, but will not be able to check it again until tomorrow. I gotta go to work. Damn work!


BTW, i'm not blaming this on Sterling. The carb was running fine before it sprung a leak.

The big hole in the side where it appears to be leaking from, that's the richer solenoid mill-out.
Is it threaded?

Hi Sterling, thanks for your help.

Yes that part is threaded. I cleaned it up yesterday. I will start it today and see if the fuel is indeed coming from there. I have a fire extinguisher handy just in case.

It was idling ok, but not great. It would stumble and shut off once in a while. If I left the RX-7 idling it would just shut off.

I did the 2nd gen coil the other day. Started it up and my idle was at almost 2k. So I tried to adjust the idle per fsm by turning the throttle screw. I could not get it to idle. No matter how much I turned, it would stay the same. So I set it to where it was originaly. I did not mess with the mixture screw. I figured maybe the 2nd gen coil screwed with my timing, so I checked timing and it was fine.

Next step was lowering the fuel pressure. I lowered it to like 2psi.
Yesterday when I went to start it, it started right away, but when I pulled the choke it would stumble and shut off. It never did that. I figured it was because of the low fuel pressure. So I raised it back to where it was at 3.5psi. I took it out for a ride. I went and got me a burrito and came back home. I could smell gas fumes in the cabin. Popped the hood, and noticed that.

No I did not purchase the carb from you. Jaime, the previous owner did.

I'm going to go start it now and I will post what I see.

Ok, here is what I did and what I found. I didn't start it. I turned the ignition switch to on so that the fuel pump would turn on. I checked the carb and sure enough that threaded hole is where the fuel is escaping from. Can that be fixed? I know nothing about carbs and I don't want to mess with it without advise.

would it not be possible to just find a bolt with the same thread, throw on a crush washer, little bit of silicone on the threads and just plug it?

The problem is, your engine is entirely too clean. If it was dirty it would never leak . Something about the constant seal of gunk.
Sorry to see your having problem but that is one clean *** assembly you have there.

You'll need to plug that Richer Vent Solenoid hole up.
You can use either another vent solenoid of another carb, or JB Weld putty.
You'll have a difficult time locating a bolt that will fit.
This should not be the source of your idle trouble, though.

BTW, don't run low pressure. There's no need, and it actually can cause troubles.
The carb was originally speced for 4.25 psi, so run it at 3.5 - 4.25.

Problem solved!

I have a spare carb, so I took off the vent solenoid like Sterling advised minus the internals, cut the connector, sanded it down, polished it a bit, and boom!
Looks good! Thanks Sterling and everyone who helped!

Now to get it back to normal.
