dad needs help

Need help; I want to get my son wheels and tires for x-mas. We have restored the car back to original together except paint. Where to buy and what wheels and tire size do you recommend.

Well Panasports are really nice. You'll be looking at 200 per wheel for those.

Other than that TireRack.com has Kosei K1s for 500 for four.

Only problem with those is that they only come in whitish silver.

Here are pictures of my car. I have 15" Panasports and it is an 85 GSL. I absolutely love them. Go with 205/50/15s.

Your car looks great!

Thanks, the K-1 15X7 205/50-15 look great. The stock wheels are 13” will the K-1 15X7 be ok?

Thank you for the compliment. I'm working on making it run great right now. I'm building a 12A with a goal of reasonable gas mileage and 200+ horsepower NA. Big streetport, beveled rotors, and standalone fuel injection and ignition timing control should help my reach the goals.

yeah, the 4 by 110 bolt pattern is a rare one. I looks like there are some old enkei rims floating around out there with this pattern if you can find them. Good luck

I'm not sure what the offset on the K-1s are but I have seen a few pictures of Rx-7s with them on them so I know they will fit. They are a great bang for the buck wheel, reasonably lightweight, strong, and look sharp. Plus there are a TON of tire choices in that size. For my next set of tires this spring I probably go with Falken Azenis Sports but I have no complaints other than tire wear with the Kumho ECSTA 712s that I had on the car since the summer.

The K-1 say bolt pattern 4-110, so the wheels will fit but going from 13” to 15” is that a problem.

No, as long as you make sure you have the proper backspacing (which, if you buy from Tire Rack, they can tell you what it is). There are several guys running those wheels with the 205/50-15s.

By the way, are you adopting any slightly older children by next christmas?

I believe as long as you stick with 205/50/15s or smaller, you are fine, but you may want to ask someone with more knowledge.

Lol, no I’m not adopting. With out giving him any clues (he is always on this site) we have been having a great time restoring the car. This site has been a godsend, I can’t thank all of you but the info we have received has been priceless.

We have the car running like a top, it’s may be one of the only RX-7’s that will start up every time in below freezing weather. He drives it to school and work every day.

idk, mine starts up perfectly in below freezing too. I'm only 16 and restored mine with my grandfather, but haven't done much with the engine yet. I have the '79 ltd. edition wheels on mine, but they're not something you can just go out and buy from a store. I wish my dad would get me panasports or kosei's for christmas...

Here's a pic of my car now-

Sweet 79, looking good. I see you have a racing beat exhaust. I know that’s what my son is saving his money for.

If you get the K-1's from tirerack you should be fine. Also IIRC the 205/50/15"s are very close to original diameter so the speedo will be close to accurate. They are sharp wheels and for the price who could complain?

lol, that's what I was saving my money for too. The bulk of the money came from me building a patio for my parents. Well worth it

there is an excellent write up on this in an old grassroots motorsports magazine. i think it was in the early nineties. they removed all the springs from the car and used a jack to compress the suspension then they took measurements and calculated. it turned out they used some 16 inch rims. it was a dark green car. i have the magazine somewhere but it will be hard to find.
