Unhappy Currently Available FB Shocks & Struts

Looks like these are drying/have dried up. Tokicos are hen's teeth (in the midst of a month-long debacle with a shop who said they had them but didn't, and is trying to convince me KYB Excels aren't the same as GR2s, even though the part numbers are the same). Anyone have any brilliant suggestions for improved-daily (not knock-your-teeth-out stiff) shocks/struts that are actually available going into 2018? I sure can't find anything.

Hey,

Try these guys, I bought some struts and shocks from them and they shipped them to me with no problems and where quick.

The link below are for some Tokico Illuminas. I believe they have the Tokico Blues in stock also.

For the rear I bought some KYB AGX shocks from a 88 Mustang. I bought them on the same website.

I called them (TH Motorsports) a few days ago, they don't have any tokicos in stock (for our cars) and cannot get more. The guy said he's been trying to get the listing pulled from the site for quite a while now (and that tokico is all but out of business).

I'd be concerned with shocks for another car based on the valving, but adjustability sort of decreases that concern. I've seen quite a few threads on fox body shocks for the rear, but nothing for strut cartridges for up front.

Try checking the For Sale thread. I seen someone selling some brand new old school Koni Red struts bought from Racing Beat. If I didnt already have Tokico's I would hop on those.

All the Konis I have seen are new-old-stock, so they've been sitting around for some time (and I suspect these have been discontinued for many years). I'd be leery of a shock that sat on the shelf for a decade; in use they move around, stay internally lubricated, and so on, but sitting on a shelf there is a lot of opportunity for seals to dry out, etc. Seems like a lot of potential for failure shortly after install, with no hope of warranty. I've also heard that these are very stiff, and have yet to see matching rears.

That's a very good point that flys right past most people.

I haven't had any problems with my KYB's I got from Rockauto. They've been fine for about a year and a half now. My car is lowered but its by no mean's slammed on the deck.

They do have the matching rear shocks... I run them on my car... no issues... Koni in my opinion makes the best shock/struts there are for performance.... i wouldnt use anything else. I also heard that Koni will rebuild them for free if you have a failure??? not sure on that so do your own research. I would not hesitate to buy a set. I personally dont think you would regret it.

I run RB springs (FYI - which do not play well with KYB). Now run Koni yellows up front (for MR2 rear) and Koni oranges in back (for fox bodied Mustang). Absolutely love the set-up.

For the Koni Yellows struts; had Max at Race Consulting Agency (888-981-7221) spec them for me. He had a source that had some in stock, excellent price and was shipped quickly. Was straight bolt in for my 85 GS. Not sure if it was a first or second gen MR2, that is why I listed contact details.

For the Koni Oranges; just looked online at various mustangs/muscle car sites for best deal. Any year fox bodied Mustang should work. These were also straight bolt in.

I'd be curious to find out the part numbers for those MR2 struts; if brand X works in that application and our cars, any other direct-fit for that car should work on ours, too.

After a month and a half, I finally seem to be getting a refund from the shop that claimed to have Tokicos but didn't, so I am back on the hunt for shocks/struts.
