Curiousity Killed the Cat...

Alright guys, I'm curious about a few things. Help me out here....

First off, reading old posts, no one seems to be a big fan of the water/oil coolers. I have one. Just replaced the o-rings for the hellavit. Does this thing cool the oil as well as the air/oil coolers or not? I'm thinking of adding a oil/temp sensor just so I know I'm not cooking my engine (or is my water temp good enough to rely on?) Do many 12a's prematuraly die with these oil coolers? You would think Mazda engineers considered these BETTER since they came after the air/oil coolers. Then again, they didn't put them on the FC or FDs either.

Secondly, reading about oil temp gauges I learned we already have a sensor on our sevens. Located on the oil pan for the Sub-Zero thingy. So am I okay without the Sub-Zero thing? Is it just a piece of crap? Or does it really help our rotaries??

Thirdly, Is it better to remove the OMP and just use 2 cycle oil? My OMP works fine, but I read somewhere that regular motor oil leaves deposits on the rotors.

Everyones input on ANY of this will be greatly appreciated....

Your oil cooler will be fine until you are ready for more mods.

Run out to your car right now and rip that sub-zero **** off and throw it away. you may want to plug the inlet on the carb, don't think there's anything wrong with it staying open though.

If your omp is working, then leave it too for now.
Give the car the water/steam treatment every few months.

cats are awesome!

It's my feeling that between 83 and 85 Mazda went cheap when they installed the water/oil cooler. Do 12a's prematurely die with this setup? I don't have the numbers but my guess is yes. Cooling is extemely important with rotaries and the water/oil cooler just doesn't do a good job of it.

Yes, the sub-zero thing is a total piece of crap. Get rid of it. hmmm... I wonder if the RX-8 has this same piece of crap?

OMP? keep it! Our cars are old and the OMP's could use a rebuild but I think it should be kept in place. With that said, my car has a rebuilt full functioning OMP and I also premix a bit of 2-stroke at every fill-up just for good measure.

I hope this helps.

alright, hold on while I jerk that crap out then. It was fun removing the "rats nest", this will be just as fun!!

How am I to know if the Sub-Zero has ever worked anyway.

Thanks for the reply, I feel a little better now about my stock set up.

I think I must think like one of the other guys on here who's signature says, "Fix it til its broke"

DONT STEAM TREAT!!!! I REPEAT DONT STEAM TREAT!!!!! YOU WILL MAKE YOUR ENGINE DIE FASTER!!!! SMALL BITS OF CARBON TURNS INTO SANDPAPER!!! IT MAY LOOK CLEAN BUTS ITS JUST TO THE NAKED EYE!!!!
2 cylce oil is awesome, too, and is highly recommended if you are willing to keep up with it. mazda didnt do it because 99.9% of people who own cars dont want to sit there, measure out oil, and add it to the tank every time you fill it up with gas, which we do a lot of anyway.
2 stroke oil burns cleaner and leaves no carbon/ashy deposits, whereas motor oil does not burn clean, and aids in creating the carbon buildup we hate so much and makes us come up with crazy ideas such as pouring water into our motor....

Shm, I'm interested to know where you got that info, since you're so incredibly adament about it? It kinda makes some sense, but I'm skeptical that the "sandpaper" effect would stay for a long period of time. Wouldn't it just blow out the exhaust?
