CP Rack&Pinion steering conversion

Has anyone got this in yet? What do you think of it ?I sounds great, the stock steering is pretty shitty,IMHO. It looks great and apparently a simple bolt-on.

In general their products sound great especially the Fender Flares and Flush mount light kit. Everytime I see one of these sites I want to buy everything!

I just posted about my install. I will tell you now, the installation (at least in my case) was a bit more difficult than a simple "bolt on".

Did you yank the motor out, or have it lifted and do it from underneath?

You shouldn't have to do anything with the motor according to the instructions. It definitely doesn't need to be removed. I did have to pull it off the mounts slightly with a hoist so that I could put a couple of 1/4" spacers under the mounts because my oil pan was touching the new rack, but it's not supposed to have the clearance issue I ran into. I detailed everything in my earlier post, check it out.

If you unbolt the u-clamp and tap off the bracket that is touching the pan and bring it to the grinder then round the edge problem solved. No need for spacers..... also
do you have old motor mounts, they tend to sag.

I put new mounts in it after noticing the interference, it had no effect new mounts vs. old mounts.

No need to be so harsh. He likes it! BTW: Properly designed parts don't need to be modified or ground down with a bench grinder to fit correctly. When you pay $600 for a part it should fit perfectly. It should also have at least an equal amount of steering travel as the stock unit. I'm probably being a baby about it though! That's what happens when you set your expectations high I guess.

Regardless I still feel this is a good product. Luckily I can modify things easily.

I'm looking into getting this steering conversion too... up where i live is too nuts to be reaming on the stearing wheel forever before it actually turns enough to go around these corners.

Not to mention the fact that if you were to modify the aftermarket product, you would most likely void any kind of warranty that came with it.

On the CP Racing R&P, I'm curious about the attachment to the column. I understand that you have to cut the lower tune and seperate the shaft at the collapse joint. What if you have a GSL-SE? Those already have a u-joint at the firewall.

You must have a manual steering column.

Doing it like CP says ruins the steering box. I'd think that it's real easy to get an upper column shaft and tube out of a junked car. Since you wouldn't be taking the box you'd probably get it for cheap (assuming they didn't realize that you're ruining it). If I had it to do again that's how I'd do it.

It ruins the box? I thought it ruins the lower half of the column but left the box in tact, or is that one in the same...

The shaft is part of the steering box on FBs. Part of what makes them such a pain to swap - big long shaft running all the way from the steering box to the steering wheel, all one piece (except for the collapsable section.)

damn that sucks, I didn't realize it was all one thing, when I took it out of my project I removed it all as one piece so I didn't even look that close to confirm it.

Yeah, dunno why Mazda didn't just put a rag joun at the box like everyone else. Yes, it's a little sleeker their way. I must admit it is pretty slick having the shaft totally enclosed like that - no worries about wires wrapping around the shaft or whatever. Soe sort of coupler just inside the tube at the steering box end would have been nice, though.
