CP Racing R&P kit - New Version - Part II

Well I got a chance to compare the "New and Improved" Rack and Pinion kit from CP today.
Went over to Pauls and got them side by side, and compared the fit, the turning radius, and all the other improvments to the rack.
And everyone will be glad to know the results.
So this comparison is between the first ones that came out, and the new ones just released, which mind you I waited over 4 months for cause of all the new improvements.

Are yah ready? at the edge of your seat? curious? how much better is it?

Scroll down..... as the tension builds for the results.......

almost!!

The "New and improved rack" comes with a new stlye sticker!

Thats right! the "BLEEP'N" did not do a damn thing to it.
only the sticker has changed, I waited 4 months for the same damn thing.
You heard it here first, of course you already knew CP was full of it, now you
are hearing from "MAX7"

CP Racing is the worst piece of **** company I have ever delt with.
CP Racing is a rip off, they are a scam.

Oh yah, that light kit they sell. Check the price on those lights for it

CP's price $250 for 4 lights (For the lights, not just the housing)
Internet $80 for 4 lights <- its true dozens of places.

Yup, that is right, CP charges $160 more for the Hella lights than if you bought them yourself. So I guess its $20 a bolt to install them for yah, what a deal.

As you may of noticed I'm rather pissed right now. Chris has lied to me, and the RX-7 people for one last time.

I can't belive I had to post this, but I want everyone to know how I truly
feel about CP Racing.

There, it has been said, I don't recomend anything CP to any 7 owner...

Oh, thier new sticker is pretty nice compared to thier old one. But never will a CP racing sticker go on my car, HELL NO!

Thanks for reading, you may resume your forum reading

I never really read much about the R&P kit. From what I heard, its a marginal improvement over stock. Hardly worth the price. As for the lights, just a waste of money. The stockers look MUCH better.

Damn, I don't think i've ever seen you post a bad thing in your life Max7, you must be pissed. WTF is up with CP saying the kit is now "improved" if its the same friggin thing, those guys do sound like a joke. I'd like to see what CP would say in defense of this, probably not much....

Did you ask CP about this? I'd like to see the whole set of e-mails. What did they promise you?

A lot of the "slow" feeling of the rack CP uses is because it's slower than stock in the center, the initial 1/4 turn in either direction. Did you look at the travel vs input at various intervals?

Either way, you're in for a pound, so to speak. So why not make the best of it and have a custom lower shaft made with better u-joints and a built-in steering quickener? Oh yeah and make extra one for me.

Oh, btw, CP says they shipped my "big brake kit" and rear wheel adapters today. No tracking number but I'm confident they're on their way. I'll take some good pics when I get the parts.

I'm serious about the shaft. I can't do it because I don' t have a spare rack and car to take measurements and stuff. I doubt seriously it would cost more than $150-200 to have the shaft made and the quickeners are $150.

A R&P setup is necessarily a fixed ratio. Meaning if it's slow on center, it's just as slow at the ends.

I can think of several ways this can be improved upon. Step 1 is a Howe steering quickener, but I'm told these need regular (frequent?) servicing to keep them slop free. Should be interesting to try and install, given space constraints. Step 2 is double U-joints instead of the single joints. Pick up an issue of Street Rodder and check 'em out, the street rod guys have to deal with all sorts of weirdities when they're trying to stuff a wide engine and modern accoutrements in a narrow 30's body. (Speaking of which... re-engineering the under-floor brake system in a Ford V-8 in order to accomodate a true dual exhaust, SUCKS ROCKS... but the engine "should" be putting out close to 500hp at the crank so the effort is worthwhile. Hopefully.) Plus, if you're concerned with such things, practically everything is available heavily polished, or any other finish you'd prefer (including plain).

I'm pretty sure that not all R&Ps are fixed ratio. But if that's the case, is the stock box variable ratio? Edit: Yes it is.

Ya know, the guy sucks royal ****! I am not pleased with the light kit. I find myself wanting to modify it. I was lied to over and over again. This guy makes me sick to my stomach. My light kit was also supposed to be new and improved...

Mr. Krall,

sorry for this horrible delay, we are in the midst of switching suppliers for materials on the light kit. Once this is completed you will get you kit plus a refund for the saving you see by switching. Will also give you 20% off any other item we produce and same week shipping as compensation. Your patience regarding this matter is appreciated.

We have been trying to email you for sometime now, however the address we have for you is not working,ckrawll3@comcast.net. Please be sure to notify if this goes through.

He did offer me some money back, but that was because I was a COMPLETE ******* RAGING *******! However, I declined a refund with the understanding the kit was built right, and because I outbid and won 4 of his auctions with no intent to pay, just to get his attention..... And it worked. I sell on ebay, so I know the charges that I cost him.

In the end, I should have taken the $100.00 he offered....

Bullshit! He ******* knew, and claimed he fucked up on the first shipment as well....... You know as well as I do, usps will get the package to you even if it is ONE LETTER OFF! I told him, " Look, don't ******* lie to me, just stop while your ahead"... So, **** HIM! EAT DOG **** CHRIS!!!!!

Hey Mark, ???? all four are cracked? or just 2? Not a heat issue as we
have tons of cars in florida, cali, arizona, running this set up and have no
reported issues. Must have been a damaged or defective batch from the
manufacturer. Let me know how many this happened to and I will zap you down
replacements asap. As for the rack we are pretty much there. Should have
yours out this week. Talk soon

Don't get me wrong, I still like the R&P kit, it's just not what I was told or the 4+ month wait.
I found a place that sells a faster rack upgrade

QUAIFE VW GOLF QUICK RACK & PINION KIT
Fits MK1 or MK2 Golf
MK1 3.1 turns, lock to lock
MK2 2.9 turns, lock to lock

So I might look into that, but still won't help turning radius.

Still mad though, I hate being lied to, specialy when you spend over $1150.00 with a company.

I found a US supplier awhile back, when I was trying to figure out what rack I had from the model number.
I'll have to try to dig it up tommorow (at work now) but the kit was just 2 new "gears" That I guess you would replace inside the unit.

How much did it go for?

Anyone ever taken a steering rack apart? I'm not sure how easy or difficult this would be.

Its funny you should mention taking a rack apart, cause back when CP first announced the RP kit they offered a "stage 1" kit that allowed you to supply your own rack. I fully intened to get the stage 1 kit and bought a rabbit rack on ebay. I took it partially apart to clean and regrease it, not very hard, a few bolts and clips and out she comes. The rack was nice and tight, and I couldn't wait to get the rest of the kit and install it on the car, next thing I know the CP site only lists the way to expensive stage 2 kit, wtf. Apparently the rack needs to be modified to fit in the tube or something, and people were messing that part up and giving CP grief about it. That right there turned me off to the whole thing, now i had a rack and no use for it, and the only way to get the kit was to spend $650. What a joke. haha, dammit I forgot all about that, now I'm pissed off again...
