couple autometer gauge questions

ok, I'm putting some autometer gauges on my 83 GS (12a) project car, or will be at least. Anway, one will be a oil temp gauge. My question is what does the sender look like, and where can I put it? I would think the oil pan, but I just wanna confirm this. Ok, guess thats just one question, but whatever

I put my oil temp sender in the pan, in place of the level sender.

My sender is also in the pan. My question to those puting the sender someplace other than the pan (& presume you only have one sender/gauge) don't you have concerns about the actual oil temp at it's hot point which is in the pan ? In my mind at the bottom of the oil filter the oil has been cooled & you could be running temps of 250* in the pan.

Curious ; )
