Cost of a 13b motor?

Hello, how much would it cost for a 13b motor? Im thinking of upgrading one day from my 12a motor to a 13b and would like to know how much the motor would cost? I can do the labor, my dad is a mechanic so that won't be a problem, thanks!!!

depends if the engine is rebuilt or just used, where you are (different demands in different areas = different prices) etc.

ok.. i cannot for the life of me remember the guy's name that is doing this right now.. but im sure he is a hell of alot of help. im past the planning stages of this, and im searching for a junkyard motor to streetport and rebuild. hopefully a 89+ motor. the gsl-se motors (pretty sure) will bolt up, all you need is this which i hear make its ALOT easier. if you do a second gen motor, you need to use a 12a front cover (so it bolts up to the motor mount from racing beat) i hear everything bolts up to the stock 12a tranny. you need a gsl-se oil pan to clear the cross member. if you go with a carb, you can even use the 12a distrubter. if i were you, i would get a 89+ motor also for the ~150-160hp stock instead of the 135hp from the gsl-se motor. also i hear the EFI on the se motor is choked up compared to the fc motor. you will need to do ALOT of wiring so if you pull the motor out of the car, make sure to get the wiring harness, ecu, fuel pump, and theres something about a oil metering pump also (cant remember exactly what)

after all that its really not that bad. if i can find a motor for $100 at the junk yard, it will take me about $400-500 to do the swap, plus a rebuild kit that i will get off a ebay. all that includes 13b header, street porting templates, oil pan, motor mounts, and various other little things

if im wrong about something or havent mentioned something.. someone correct me, but im pretty sure thast on the ball. like i said earlier, i havent actually done the swap, but im going to be into it once i get the motor

I'm the guy doing it, or was.... I'm now stuck waiting for parts to arrive. (the engine and transmission) I'm also changing from an automatic to a stick at the same time.

My plan of attack has really come down to this.
1. Mount everything.
2. Figure the wiring out. (this by far is the hardest part) This wouldnt be a problem if you were going with a carbed 13b setup, but I am swaping the just about all of the stock setup from the 89. SO I've got EFI to worry about. Besure to have both wiring diagrams for both engines at hand.
3. Then worry about plumbing.

The project is going much faster than I thought it was. However once I have the wiring completely figured out (I've figured out most of it), I will post a howto on adapting the wiring. It will save someone the headaches I've been going through

well are you doing a turbo setup??? if your doing a turbo setup go out and get a michrotec ems for about 1k wire it all in ALOT LESS HEADACHES... if your running a na motor go with a carb ONCE AGAIN ALOT LESS HEADACHES... your going to need to swap the 13b cover off and put the 12a on the 13b if you want to use the stock mounts...

*sigh*... i'm sure I have explained it a dozen times but for anybody that doesnt know....

I have all of the 89 parts.... ALL of them. I got them very cheap, much less expensive than an holley setup, or somthing like that that requires a custom manifold.

For the front cover, it is a 12a frontcover, but it was modified so that I can attach the 89 electric OMP to it.

Besides, when I want a real performance car, I will go with a turbo setup. Right now I am just getting my license, so I dont need somthing that I will be too much for me to handle.

When I got the car, the motor was blown anyway, and I wanted more "omph" than the 12a had to offer.

This will be my daily driver, and for daily driving EFI is so much easier than carbs. Ever had to start in cold weather, or on a hill, or both? EFI is a lifesaver here.

Some of you guys probably disagree with me bigtime, oh well....

I have drawn out like 90% of all the wiring mess anyway.



If I were to do it all over again... I would do the same thing, I now know so much more about the wiring than anybody ever wanted to know.

I'm with you on this one hornbm, I wish I had the money to put a NA 89 engine in, I think it would just about the perfect setup, the reliability of NA and EFI and it would be plenty of power for a car as light as ours. Its in my cars future I know that much.

for the motor itself, you can spend from $300 right on up to the $4,000-$5,000 range. it depends on your desires and pockets ... depending on which 13B your engine is based, you may need another $200-$300 for it to drop into your chassis.

however, i think the meat of your question cannot be answered by anyone, until you decide on what setup you plan to run on whichever 13B platform you choose, because the motor itself is the EASY part (though it may not be cheap) ... it's how you plan to get it to run, that's the cost issue.

i just want to take the time to acknowledge and commend you for this sentiment. i, for one, would be grateful to see something like this even though i chose a different avenue than stock ECU.
