correct way to hook up starter?????

what is the correct way? i hooked it up power to the long one, and ground to the short one with the nut on, but it wouldn't turn the engine over, all it did was make clicking noises. i tried hooking it up the other way, but there really isn't a way to position the wires so i can get the starter to fit. any help would be greatly appreciated--thanx

I put the power cable to the power side of the starter and the ground wire I bolted to the motor mount or any ground on the motor. Should fire right up!

Dont forget to plug in the slide connector in between the starter terminals.

Power cable goes on the large lug on the rear of the starter, left hand side (of the 2 lugs). Ground goes on the long long bolt holding the starter in, on the engine side. The nut on the long bolt goes towards the front.

Make sure your grounds strap is hooked up also, Without this you will get slow or no starts with only the click you heard. If the signal wire wasn't hooked up you wouldn't hear anything at all.

might be a bad starter. Even with new or reman starters i check them at the local autoparts store before I install. Some of the re-builders are VERY unreliable.
