coolant on top of engine

Hi , This is my first post, My name is Marc, Im in Kanata, Ontario, Canada
I have had a 1979 rx-7 ( 5sd manual ) for a couple of months, Its raw but I love it.

I am going to paint it using a "new" "marine - roller paint " technique - if you guyes are interested in seeing the results.

The problem with the car is that there is a coolant puddle on the top of my engine. IF any one could tell me where to start that would be great.

I am quite unfamiliar with the rotary engine and still dont have a manual - is the 1980 carburated also ? - is this a good manual to refer to ?

I also havent talked to anyone who knows how bad breathing in the coolant fumes are either.

Thanks , for any help you guyes have to offer.
PS : It has a backfire from hell.

Welcome to the forum Marc. If the puddle of coolant is below the carb like near the intake manifold and engine than its the intake o rings. They are bad. Its an cheap fix, but you have to go to work and take the carb off, put new o rings in then put back together. Also, get a new intake manifold gasket. Check out www.mazdatrix.com, they have the parts you will need. Or you coulod also install 20mmfreeze plugs, and it wont hurt anything. Check out the faq page, archives, and use the search buton and you will get great info. Yes, all first gens(79-85) have carbs except the 13b fuel injected GSL-SE. Hope everything works out for you. God bless

First you need to figure out approximately where the coolant is coming from. If you determine it's more towards the intake side of the engine, that's good because it's an easy fix. Order an intake manifold gasket and two o-rings. It's easier to take the manifold off without removing the carb. Four bolts and two nuts. You'll need to detach the throttle cable, metering oil pump rod and other stuff first. It's good to drain some of the coolant before hand too.

I'm sure others will chime in soon.

Ya, I was beat too...lol. I love winning...heheh. Yep, just get these parts and you should be set. You wont need hi temp gasket sealer on the intake manifold gasket either, You need it to be flat as possible. A little is good though. Make sure all the old gasket is scraped off too

Welcome to the forum;

Click on the attached link and it will go to member trochoids profile. There click onto the link he has provided for the FSM. Factory Service Manual. There is where you will find vauleable information when working on your car. It also has the detailed diagnostic steps to take in order to figure out the inherent backfire problem of the 79-80 models.

As far as the coolant leak, it looks like you're covered by the precious posters.

wow, thanks for all the help so far - As for my disasembly - meh

I believe i may have messed something up when I took the "thing with the wound coil sping" off the butterfly valve that covers half the carb.

The butterfly valve to which i refer is towards the middle of the car when standing on the passengerside, and the spring is toward the firewall. I personally don't know what it does , but taking that spring off seemed to be a bad idea because now i dont know how to rewind it to reinstall.

This was all in the attempt to remove the last of 4 nuts that hold the carb down.
I don't even know if that is what I need to remove -

Ok nevermind - I freaked out a little there - but its not a big deal it goes back together.

On that note :
do i even need to remove the four nuts that hold the carbs on ?
My only goal is to remove the assembly at the intake manifold gasket, and get to thoes O-rings. Im having trouble -

is the factory service manual a nice improvement over the service manual which is posted ? - its kind of difficult to see the pics in it - is it a hanes-style version?

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=carb+removal. Print this up and check it out. I did it this way. I took the carb off then the manifold, but you can jsut take the intake manifold off with the carb on. Make sure you flush all the coolant. Flushing a little bit didn't matter for me..it spilled everywhere. so flush all the way. When you put the new intake o rings in, make sure they are in good. Use hylomar if needed.
