Coolant temp too high?

Does this look normal? I've never really noticed my engine temp get this high. But then again, I do mostly city driving, and this was the first time I had been driving the 7 at 120 for over 1hr straight.

Just a little high. I am wondering how it is just around the city, cause this is being cooled from basically the ram air effect at that speed, correct?

for a moment I thought it was mph and thought daumn 120 for over an hour? and at that rpm?

Anyways, yeah, I'd say something wrong with the rad or the thermostat or the water pump. Rad would be my first guess.

That problem will be water flow

Plenty of air at 120kph

Check fan belt isn't slipping causing waterpump to go too slow
Replace Thermostat

Then check and repair radiator

Could also be retarded timing actually

In the city it dosent go over 1/2 way at all.

I had the camera with me because I was on a day trip with my gf to the 1000 islands.

Timing could be the issue. I've suspected bad timing since I got it back from the shop. They fiddled around with it and ever since it just hasnt had any power. It feels gutless. But I have a full custom exhaust, air pump and ACV delete and AC removed.... I took it in for new plugs and a tune up and now its doing this and has no power.

One thing I noticed, with the air pump gone the Alt belt only contacts the water pump on the one side of the pulley. Is that right? Or did someone screw up somewhere?

your right, one side of the pulley. id check the cooling system as stated above. those are bad *** gauges btw id love to have the fuel, temp, and speedo ones..you know sometimes the stock gauges are not all that accurate to the "T" but even then its still a reference..id check cooling and then buy an aftermarket water temp gauge. that way its real time..

That may be the cause, your pully doesnt have enough contact with a belt causing it to slip. Look into the dual alternator pully or the yoohoo belt.

At the rpm you were running, you shouldn't get much belt slippage, but it's possible. Make sure the belt tension is correct and I strongly suggest installing a yoohoo belt of the dual sheave alt pulley. At that speed, the airflow into the radiator should be sufficient for cooling and the fan clutch should be free wheeling.

It may be that the fan clutch has seized and with it spinning at engine rpm, it can actually impede the air flow through the radiator. If the fan won't spin freely with the engine off and cold, it's be time to replace the fan clutch.

radiators.com... Just buy a new one. It's like 100 bucks shipped. Best "upgrade" for the money I've done on the RX yet. I have to worrie about getting enough heat into the car now for proper fuel mileage etc...

I had to modify it a little. heres the thread...

Would a water temp sending unit on a second gen motor be different than a first gen? I just installed that new turbo motor and my water temp gauge went way up I mean almost pegged but I think it was wrong because the hoses didn't feel overly hot and it didn't boil over or anything.

Iirc, the senders are the same. One reason for the gauge to peg is because it may grounding somewhere in the circuit. Not sure if the S5 senders are different from the earlier versions or not, but I do believe the S4 ones are the same as the 1st gen senders.

Thanks! I'll check it out, that's probably it.

Sounds like the guys who tuned your car mistuned it. Both an incorrect fuel mixture and incorrec timing can cause overheating.

Ya. I'm going to buy a timing light and do it myself. The car has NO ***** whatsoever since I got it back... I'm pretty pissed.

I got a 3l220 belt on there and set the timing right... the timing was WAY WAY off. They must of tried doing it by ear. Haven't taken her on the highway yet, but its running much more smoothly.
